What size hardware cloth in bottom of dog crate? (broody jail)

The bottom wire of my crates are about 6x6 spacing, not enough to stand on when raised...
..and have heard of birds getting thru those holes when crate is turned upside-down and the 'bottom' becomes the 'top'.

Yes, 1/2" HC is to small for poops to fall thru.

I used 1x2 cage mesh, carefully flattening it and leaving wires on edges sticking out to wrap around crate wires. May have used another piece of wire to tie down middle of the new 1x2 bottom.

I don't bother with a wire or elevated floor, I have the pen directly on the ground. Haven't had any issue breaking broodies that way but then again I haven't had any hardcore broodies and I always start the breaking process immediately after I see the signs, so they usually break quickly.
