For those of us with Ameraucanas, we sure want to help inform everyone on this breed. There are so many misconceptions and it is not your fault!
An Ameraucana mixed to any chicken can lay a blue egg and still hold some Ameraucana traits (muffs, beard, tail, slate legs)...but it will be an EE. An Araucana mixed to any other chicken can give you the same results of a blue egg layer, but some of the offspring can be rumpless, ear tufts, etc., etc. and it is still an EE. If you buy from a hatchery or feed store, you can almost guarantee you have an EE. If you are not after showing your chickens, but having beautiful blue/green eggs...you are all set!
An egg is an egg is an egg. If you can crack it, you can eat it. Eggs from a new layer will vary from HUGE double yolkers to puny lil marbles, to eggs with no shell, or a soft shell. I think you are lucky and have one you can "work" with.
