What the heck IS this crud?! EDIT: Canker treatment needed, HEEEELLLP!

Canker is Very common in pigeons. You need to swab the mouth with iodine. That will kill the bacteria in the mouth. Take the lesions out, try not to handle with bare skin. Then treat that bird & others he is with with Ridzole in the water for 5 days. It will clear it up and the birds will be fine.

I took the lesions out as best I could last night, took a while but it was worth it. Only one side of his throat has anything on it so far, but i've taken your advice and swabbed it out with iodine.
I have him on Baytril twice a day, and Flagyl once a day. Keep your fingers crossed. He's been isolated from the rest of my flock for over a week now, so. I thank all of you for your suggestions, but I will not cull this bird. He means more to me than a top showbird would. I've checked the other 34 flock members, and none of them have any signs at all. I'm going to keep an eye on them, however.

I know what you mean- It's heartbreaking to have to come to that point...but I am glad he's on the meds and he's OK for now.

He's looking better all the time! Yesterday before I got the lesions out, he was kinda just standing there huddled up. Last night after I got it out, and he had his meds, he was standing up normally, etc. I think he'll be okay.

The Iodine will clear it up asap, it is good for all forms of thrush, human /critter. The Flagyl is the same as Ridzole so in about 4 to 5 days it will be gone. You might want to watch when he get's stressed the next time. He may get another bought of it. The canker he has is from pigeons or wild birds. We have a goose that we aquired when he was 3 years old that came down with it also. He was not raised her on our property so I believe his system did not develope the anti bodies to it like the birds that were raised here. ie the other geese that we have that grew from hatchlings, eating, drinking, & living with the older one have never gotten it even though he has had 2 bouts. They should have since they eat /sleep/ and drink out of the same buckets as he does, and even though he had a current outbreak they got nothing. During his outbreak he was with the others, and they all were treated with ridzole in the water even though they did not have any symptoms. So don't get rid of him, just keep an eye out for signs of it since you know what to look for.

I am going to treat my rooster for this. Where do you buy Flagyl at? Is the iodine, just the basic red kind you get at the drug store?
