What the heck to duck eggs taste like

Quote:
I wouldn't say the 5 ducks I had free ranging over my 1 1/4 acre is too many. Especially compared to the number of chickens that shared the area with them. I think actually that the water they use stinks worse because they use it both to eat with (ducks prefer to wet down their food) and also they use it to poop in. They like to throw water everywhere so it's impossible to keep the area where their water is dry so if you water them inside a pen instead of outside in the open, the pen gets nasty fast.

I have my water about 10 feet from the feeder. It keeps the area around the feeder dryer (wet feed REEKS and molds fast) and it is not so far away that they lose half the feed running to the water to wash it down.

Hubby says he can't taste any difference between chicken and duck eggs. I notice a slight difference, but it isn't a bad difference...just different!

I have fried them, scrambled them, and used them in my morning egg creams. No problem!

I need to try them in some of my sugar-free baking recipes, but I haven't had time lately.

How soon should ducks start laying?
I have flying mallards and one appleyard mix, and they are 5 months old. I have 3 drakes, they all get along well, and 3 hens who are loud and bossy. They all live together in tight quarters at night, but free range all day. On real cold nights, they sleep together in a large baby pool filled with straw in my garage. I feed them chick starter because it's higher in protein, and greens daily from my kitchen.
I'd really like to see an egg soon.

To me, duck eggs taste just like chicken eggs. My husband likes them better than chicken eggs, he says they have more flavor. It's one of those things that you just have to try for yourself.

2009NewChickMom - Ducks start laying at around 20 weeks old. They're seasonal layers, so they should start laying pretty soon. My Mallard just started laying a few days ago - HUGE green eggs.

Buster, I know what you mean about those ducks!! I've got 3 and have 8 hens, and boy do they eat, and POOP!

but get this, the animal control here says that the chickens have to go, but I can KEEP my ducks! I'm working to keeping them all. Just thought you might find that funny, being ducks are so much noisier and messier than any chickens, right? lol

I think that's hilarious! People have really funny ideas about chickens, don't they?
