what to add to chick water

All I've been adding to the water is the vitamin/electrolyte mix I got when I bought the chicks from McMurray. I started them (26+ the Mystery Chick) on it the day I received them(Oct. 23). 2 weeks later I bought 7 1-week-old Silkies, which also got the treated water. A week after that I traded 17 original chicks + the Mystery Chick to my feed store for bags of dog food.

A month ago I bought 4 2-day old Serama chicks (see how chicken math works?!!) In the 38 chicks I've had I never had ONE instance of pasty butt. None of the chicks have died. I was/am a complete newbie -- before only being around chickens on my grandparents farm & NEVER caring for any!! LOL!! I had a lot to learn!

Is the vitamin/electrolyte water doing them any good? Does the vitamin and herb supplement *I* take every morning do ME any good? Who knows? Who has 'proof'? Would I have had the SAME results using plain water? Again, who knows? All I know is, they haven't died, they didn't have pasty butt, they're all nicely feathered out, they're growing and eat well. So I'll continue what I'm doing.

As an aside to ACV, my Aunt sweared by it. She took a tablespoon of it with EVERY meal. Did it work? Was she healthier than she would have been without it? I don't know, but she passed a week before her 92nd birthday.......

I will look furhter into but all people on BYC using the stuff could easily be wrong. The use of ACV could be justified much like smoking cigarettes was decades ago.
YOu could be right of course I have read studies both ways.... but if hundreds of ppl on here think it has helped their chickens not just a hand ful of ppl and havent seen any harm at all but think they see positve results may work anyway.

Sometimes whats noticed by ppl with their animals daily is much better affirmative than a study. My vet doesnt know ALL the things my friend who are dog breeders know.Vets specialize in animals but NOt a particular breed so only know generalizations on whats right and good for (ANY) Dog. But the long time breeders have tried and true methods that work that vets dont often even know if it works . .
There are many things that are used for medicine today the medical community dont know how it works or why. Doesnt mean it doesnt
.Many vaccines "work " and even cancer meds ...but the scientists dont know WHY.
As a child my mom gave me honey and lemon in water if i had a cough
Now HONEY is found has a bacteria killing effect.
My son works in a hospital said on the burn unit uses honey on burns
Also maggots
Who woudda thought 20 year ago! CRUDE! BUT WORKS to take off dead skin and make the wound healthy

Another Personal example.... when younger i worked a factory job which got to well over 100 for most of the summer, a 12 hours shift, no air conditioning
.The first years i n summer sometimes i could drink and drink water and 2 steps from the water fountain i was terribly thirsty not just a little .I drank each night until i was sick to my stomach and was actually sloshing.
Then the company starting giving us drinks with eletrolites & salt "Gatorade".
The difference in how i felt was Amazing One glass I didnt need another for hours.
Never sick again never dying of thirst yet docs even today on tv etc say each summer "water is just as good when you are thirsty than (Gatorade) type products" Oh contrare Mon ami !!! If you go in most union factorys there are coolers of gatorade on the floor. even today
So often there is no "proof" that something works but it does

Just as they are using many old time methods for medicine now that were poo pooed years ago

So studies dont always point to the real outcome . Science is supposed to be EXACT But .Many "absolute" thoughts on many things change as time goes by .

I get similar results with a lot more birds over many more years simply using water that in addition to H20 has trace electrolytes coming from aquafer and chloramines to suppress bacterial growth. All I know is it works. Only the chloramines are additional and they had to be tested rigerously before it could be introduced to water supply.
