What to do about Hunting dogs killing my chickens

My dog wants to know what kind of hunting dog is incapable of concentrating on the one kind of game that they were trained to find. He says he was trained to ignore all other animal scents but rabbit.
An untrained or poorly trained one.

So sorry for your loss, and for having to waste time talking to that idiot at AC. I agree with others here; you do have the right to shoot trespassing dogs who are harassing your stock.
Electric fencing is not that expensive, and pretty easy to set up. You can get a very potent charger on Amazon, and wire at the farm store. Premier1supplies.comhas very good products and advice, in their catalog and on the phone.
I had a very different response a few years ago from the sheriff when I had a hound hunting on my farm without permission. I drove around the block, found a pickup with dog carriers parked, and called with the license #. It was from across the state! I drove home, the cop came out, and never had that happen again.
I too wouldn't mind appropriate coon hunting here, with polite individuals who ask first!!!

Luck for me, several neighbors across the river run coons and deer with dogs every weekend but they have them well trained. I've seen then wander thru the chickens with their nose to the ground and just ignore the birds. That's the ones with the big pink radio collars. I have also had one from a neighbor down the road chasing a deer thru my yard then when it saw the chicken, go after them and kill one before I ran it off and followed it home. I explained to my neighbor what would happen to that untrained dog next time it got near my birds. Haven't seen it since.

Sorry for your loss. Sad to say, it seems as if electric fencing of some kind is your best option. I also think you should post no hunting signs all around your property. That will give you a solid legal standing. Sure you can shoot a dog chasing your livestock, if you see it and happen to have a gun on you, but you may lose chickens in the process, and there will always be more dogs. If it were me, I'd also send a letter of complaint to the head of animal control. A game camera could also come in handy, to identify individual dogs. It seems in these cases that they always want you to prove it. It's wrong that it's your job to do all the work, because of irresponsible people, but that's the way it is. :(
