I have Buff Orpatons and then are about 4 1/2 months old, they have a big enough pen 50X50 with 22 of them running around, Can someone give me some ideas on what I can put in the pen during the day to keep them from pecking each other for just fun ( but I also understand that they are doing the "Who is in Charge routine) ? I have given them leftover scraps of Lettuce, fruit, and Etc. So any input would be truly appreciated

Thanks,
Rayma

Plant a few bushes or trees if you don't have weeds growing which they won't eat. Put things in there for them to climb in, hide under, jump on, etc. Give them a flock block now and then, or hang a cabbage, or throw them a few apples. Watermelon rinds are great for a day or so. Actually I give them a lot of the fruit because I'm not that fond of it; once I've eaten the very center, they get their turn. On hot days, freeze a couple of peaches or apples or whatever and let them peck away.

You can also place hay or straw into run and scatter grains in it. Birds will invest time and effort going after those eats. Birds will also consume portions of some hays like alfalfa and red clover. Make certain they have adequate grit in diet.

Try hanging a head of cabbage or lettuce it swings and moves as they peck keeping them entertained.

I Have a flock who loves bananas so on the hot days I put the bananas on skewers and freeze them then I stick them in the ground in their run area;) They love it.
