What to do for the only baby chick who survived the trip through the mails?

the mirror thing is a good idea! i hatched out chicks this year for the first time and the first chick to hatch was dragging the second chick who just came out all over the bator and very just being crazy mean to it. she was dr so i pulled her out and put a stuffed teddy in their till a few dried off to keep her company. i am so sorry about your chicks i couldnt even imagine that =( im glad they took care of you though. good luck till she gets some friends.

I have a single chick..she was the only one who hatched from her clutch...She is 7 weeks old now..and is fine. We never put in stuffed animals..didn't know that it was a problem! She is now being introduced to our other chickens! Your chick will be fine!

I'm so sorry for you to have had to go through that! We just got our chicks through the mail last week & we were terrified to open the packages and find any dead, let alone all but one! Luckily, all ours were perfectly healthy & happy & alive & are all still thriving 11days later...so if your ever looking for any other places to order from I'd highly recommend those two...Meyer Hatchery (they put in a heat pad to keep the chicks warm through the trip) & Chicken Scratch Poultry (they threw in extras at no cost...we ordered 16 & got 22!)

Awe! What a sad delivery!
I am almost in tears; just got our first batch of mail ordered chicks 3 days ago & all are well! I ordered from Mc Murray.
What I was going to say about heat is that I boiled water & filled mason jars w/ it, then wrapped them a couple times in wool or cotton to be a heat source for the babies. They have each other, but seem to like the larger warm soft thing in their brooder as a substitute mommy.
I bet she turns out to be the queen of the coop when you get more! Did you name her yet??

Good morning, everyone! Thanks to you all and some other chicken lovers around here, our little girl is doing great! She is bigger and stronger this morning, I swear. Such a CHICKEN! Doing all her chicken things.

She has acquired the name of Sunshine, partly due to her color, partly because she deserved a fun upbeat name. After all, she is a proven survivor!

And with a new day, I have a more philosophical attitude. What happened, happened. It shouldn't have in an ideal world but here we are and moving forward. Death is part of life. The batch that will ship from My Pet Chicken on Monday will be 3 Golden Buffs (the breed has a bunch of other names too), one little boy and 2 little gilrs, and 5 assorted rare breed girls. They too use a heat pack.

Glad to hear about "Sunshine" - perfect name! I'm also happy to hear that My Pet Chicken is refunding you the cost of the chicks that did not survive, and can get more to you so soon. I have also had good customer service with MPC. I received 5 chicks from them about a month ago. One of them turned out to be the wrong color (was supposed to be a white cochin, but got a partridge cochin). They offered a refund or I could get another chick for free. Since I already had a second order in place with them, I just had them add another chick to that one; I'll be getting my second order in about 2 weeks.

Hopefully you can post a picture of Sunshine so we can all see what she looks like!

So we agreed that I will get a refund for 8/9 of the shipping and 8/9 of the chicks and I went ahead and placed another order yesterday which will ship this coming Monday.

Yep, have been taking photos. Yesterday was almost a total loss as a work day so I'm up to my eyeballs in stuff to catch up with but plan to do a blog post about her today or tomorrow, with photos, and will link to it.
