Hi y'all, so my chicks are about 4-5 weeks and I currently have them downstairs in our brooder. We are building their coop and run in the next couple of weeks. I was just wondering what I am to do next. Food, heat lamp, bedding etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Get them moved out to the coop as soon as it's ready. Wean them off the extra heat and keep them on a grower. Pine Shaving is best for bedding.

I would take them outside, even if you are not coop built yet. They need at least doses of fresh air and sunshine. They can stretch their legs and get some exercise. Even if you have to stay with them, it will make the final adjustment to the outside better.

At 4-5 weeks, they don't need a heat lamp. They will not need one in the winter, either. Make sure the coop is well ventilated, but not drafty on the chickens if you live where it gets cold in the winter.

You will want to get that coop and run started sooner rather than later. Those birds are going to quickly outgrow that brooder and get over crowded.

Definitely get cracking on the coop when weather and time permits! Prioritize coop over run, so the chicks can get moved out quickly. 5 week old chicks are plenty old enough to be going without heat, unless you live in an area with more extreme temperatures.

Welcome to BYC!
Agrees with getting them off the heat lamp and outside.

Adding your general geographical location to your profile is most helpful.
It's easy to do, then it's always there!
