what to do to have a broody hen

Hens usually brood in spring and summer, but quite a few will brood in the colder months. Unfortunately there’s no direct way to encourage them to brood, you just have to be patient. It helps to have a “broody” breed, a breed with a higher tendency to brood (like a silkie, Orpington or a Pekin) but even then, you can’t guarantee broodiness. You could try allowing a clutch to build (I would recommend replacing with fake eggs though) and offering a quiet dark nest box, though this too, will not guarantee a result. If you really want chicks from your flock you could borrow an incubator and brooder or invest in one.
