What to do when the predator is a person?

if you live in an are were it is zoned for free range.....cattle and such it is the driver who is held responcible , they will have signs posted saying "free range" are you in an are where free range is ok?, if so there are also fines for driver that hit a free range animal wether its a cow, hourse or chicken. where i lived with my parents horses can free range, one year a man from california shot two horses that had wondered onto his property, he thought they were some of the wild horses he called the wildlife officers ,it turned out they belonged to someone the officers told the man who shot them that if he did not want horses on his property he needed to FENCE HIS PROPERTY ! when people found out , people started sprey painting "horse killer" and "murderer" on his white dumpster, every day he was out there painting over it......he gave up and sold his hous and moved!!!

Indiana rules regarding livestock: It is the owners responsibility to contain their livestock. If a car hits a cow or horse (etc) the anilmal's owner must pay for the damages to the vehicle, and pay fines for the animal not being properly contained. I went to the Indiana website when I was interested in goats; found out more than I wanted! BUT, I want to say, it is deplorable that someone would intentionally hit any living thing! I cannot tell you how many turtles I have removed out of the road so no one would hit them! I would let the local police/sheriff know about the duck killings just in case the violence increases!

I have been gone most of the day but the first thing is my parents live in the country and in Indiana you own to the center of the road a permant building in the country they live in only has to be 2 1/2' from the edge of the road. The ducks were not it the road they were about 2' from the road. They didn't do it on accident as there is a 90 degree corner 300' to the west and another one 150' to the east and it's a paved road. As for any kind of animal control good luck with that. About 3 years ago they had a chain link fence up that was all the way around the property one day the neighbors dog got loose and killed over 20 of thier chickens. It wasn't the first time it had killed thier chickens but it was by far the worst and the police wouldn't do anything about it. They even said "if the dog comes back I'm telling you don't shoot the dog". So they took the chain link down and put up a wooden fence so the chickens had a chance to get away through the fence. So, yes I can see if the duck were IN the road but they were NOT in the road.

As far as I can tell, the only thing that can get my birds is a human and I want to think of ways to solve even that, because I'm a paranoid person and getting worse everyday. How about you show your parents this forum and introduce them to the various coops/runs. There has to be a way of protecting those birds. I didn't spend all that money on mine to have an animal or other person killing them. And I know there are people out there that are that mean.

This is one thing farmerchick says I agree with. Everyone runs to call the police and animal control all the time. Eventually it could put you in the firing line. I would try to keep them on my property and tackle the problem that way. You said the guy was messed up in the head, if he truly is mentally ill you will never reason with him. I would just ignore him when possible and only report the provable he does. If he is mentally ill and has already rammed your car, who knows what he could do next?! It is terrible he hit your parents ducks, but again if he is mentally ill who knows what was going thru his mind. The only solution I see is to keep them on your property. I know it's expensive but may be your only choice. On the other hand I feel sorry for animals that live solely in pens, it seems almost mean. That is just my opinion. When I let my chickens free range they are so happy. But there are risks. I would consider calling the authorities on this one because it sounds as if this guy could be dangerous. It is a touchy situation, one that could go either way and will take some thought. I am not a big fan at calling the police or AC but sometimes it is warranted.

take the iniative to talk face to face w. this person. There is animosity that is brewing and if that is never settled there will be incidents for years and years to come. I know you are angry over the actions of this person, as I am to just read what he did to you. Offer some sort of truce and bring all this anger to an end. Just a suggestion. If things did not improve afterwards, I would fence the animals and / or call animal control.

I agree with someone that the police should be able to determine something from the tire tracks. Hope you haven't waited too long. And I hope you took plenty of photos of the crime scene and dead bodies.

The other problem though is that I've never found the police to be any help with missing or killed animals. I just don't think they consider it anything but a waste of their time when an animal is involved. However it's worth a try. Connie

NO ONE saw the car or person.

Pure quess on "who did it intentionally" and if it ever WAS intentional. Maybe 1 duck in the road caused a swerve into the others and that duck was thrown into the grass....seeming like all were not in the road. You just don't know the real situation....none of us do.

And most roads own the first 10 ft. (or something like that) from the payment onto property......so I doubt they were on "their personal land"

And it might have not been this person....anyone can swerve a car from accidents, putting on lipstick, old person not seeing correctly, driving too fast, etc. etc.

Ya can't win in this situation.

Pen up your animals if you want them to live.....it is simple. No one else can be to blame seriously.
BUT of course a person "deliberately" driving over to kill animals on a road has major psycho problems. Most would never do this.

AND it is all hypothetical if it even happend this way.
