What to do when the predator is a person?

At the very least, make a report. Then if it happens again and you have a witness (or photo from a game cam), it will be taken more seriously.

Personally, I would don a ninja suit (size xlarge), sneak onto his property and let him have it.

Or maybe just sit at home and do this to him

I know this sounds horrible, but maybe you could check the persons car for traces of the birds. Then you could file a report. If the guy has feathers and blood on his car, he'll have to do some explaining. Even if you can't bust him this time, if he tries it again, this will be more evidence against him. Good Luck.

Fence them or expect to suffer continued losses. If all they have is two acres, they should have foreseen this with chooks/quacks out free ranging. Especially with the 'history' they have with this guy. This type of thing on occasion can lead to a blood feud. It was only a matter of 'when' and not 'if' the guy did something cowardly and vicious. The perp is a retarded neanderthal and would do to a human what he would to a defenseless animal. Only thing keeping him from it is possible consequences if caught. Same mentality for an arsonist. A coward.

Owners problem...not the other persons.

Keep your animals contained or on your property. Once they are off your property there are fair game to any nasty situations. Even human enemies.

yes you can try to "trap a person's actions" out in the public area like the side of a road, but the main problem is your animals are attracting the issue. Keep them contained. Simple.

No one is to blame except the owners not keeping their animals on their own property.

While I understand and hate the fact also that someone can be cruel...and deliberate actions should be reported, it is your responsibility to protect.

I agree with FarmerChick. While it is miserable having to deal with jerk neighbors, it is the owner's responsibility to to prevent harm. So to me, the question is how to protect them, not how to get the jerk in trouble. Avoid the jerk at all cost, and protect the birds from him. And yourself! You are not going to change him into a nice person, no matter how hard you try.

A covered, large pen seems to be the best solution, and perhaps clipping wing feathers. Free range only when supervised, so they stay out of the road/right of way.

Sorry this happened on your watch!

Yea, I agree...They should be fenced up. I hate to keep my birds up all the time but there are too many things that could happen to them..we've even had raccoons take them in broad daylight! But that guy that ran over the ducks, may he be forever haunted by our angry thoughts..

So sorry for your loss.

Maybe my parents experience can be of some use to you.

My parents lived on a curved section of road. The speed limit for the curve was 20 mph. They always had drivers end up in their front and side yard. They had an invisible fence installed to keep their dog in. Many times, they would wake up in the morning to find their yard torn up by tire tracks. Once they even found car parts because the driver hit the hugh tree in the front yard less than 20 feet from their house. They were always worried that their dog would get hit by a car in his own yard. (BTW, Max was the best dog ever.)

My parents pounded rebar into the ground at intervals along the edge of their property where the point of entry always seemed to be. They left about 18 - 24" sticking out of the ground and painted it bright orange so that drivers could see it. The rebar acted as a deterrent, but would also caused damage to any vehicle that accidentally slide onto their property, hopefully to the point that they couldn't drive away without facing consequences for their actions. It only took a few months before they caught their first . I've also seen people use large boulders, however, that can be very expensive.

I got to agree with Farmer Chick. You can't let your animals run at large. Especially in the road. I think you'd have a hard time explaining to the law that your animals were in the road or even close to it. Could you amagine if a little old lady was driving by and your ducks were in the road, then she goes off the road to avoid hitting them and is killed. All to avoid a duck, because she loves animals. What if they were out in the road and had a few cars stopped then someone came speeding along and rammed in the back causing a pile-up and someone was killed. Your fault, his fault, nobodys fault, someone is dead or hurt. Ducks in or even close to the road is a accident waiting to happen. Sure that guy might be a jerk but your just giving him an excuse. If he drove across my yard to hit the ducks I'd pumble him before the law even got there. But It would be my fault if they were near or in a road.
I live in an agricultural area. Once on a county road not far from me a farmers cow was loose and ran out in the road and was hit.
The car had about $2700. damage done to it by hitting the cow. The farmer was responsible for the repairs. You may want to check into it but there may be a chance you may be liable if your duck cause an accident. JMHO Will
