We live in a city and cannot have a rooster. Unfortunately, one of the chicks we raised this year ended up being a cockerel. Our local feed store will take unwanted roosters for free and they typically sell them for $10-15 each. At this price I don't think they are being sold for meat since I doubt anyone would pay that much for a bird that still has to be processed. My plan was to first list our EE cockerel on Craigslist and see if we get any takers. He is hand raised and very sweet to our children. I figure that way I might have some control over what type of home he goes to. Primarily, I would prefer he goes to a relatively predator proof home and doesn't end up as raccoon food. If I don't get any good takers, I was going to bring him to the feed store. At least this was my plan until I spoke to a neighbor who said that the feed store cockerels are purchased by people who use them to condition their fighting cocks. Her sources for this opinion are less than reliable but concerning nonetheless. Do you think this is could be the case? If so, I would much rather he be killed humanely and eaten than end up being tortured.

I would craigs list him for $10 or what ever price you want. With a picture of him and his good points (kid friendly) and not ask questions if someone wants him. Good luck

I suspect your neighbor is correct.
Thanks for the reply. I know nothing about cock fighting and I was really hoping that somehow she was wrong. I can't imagine someone trying to use our tame guy this way. He is currently near the bottom of the pecking order and runs and hides from the mature hens and two other pullets.
