What to do with packing peanuts???

Have you concidered finding another person to split a shipment with? That would reduce the number of packing peanuts. GL with what ever you choose to do!

Hmmm, If you know they are little roos i'd get rid of them as fast as possible. I have hatched out many, many roos compared to the number of pullets i've gotten. If I had know they were roos they'd have been gone so fast, they eat and eat and eat and don't grow nearly fast enough to make a good meal, add the fact that'd you'd have to do the deed and its a pain.

A packing peanut is an extra chick they put in the box to keep the small order of chicks warm. Yes they are free but they are almost always extra roos, unless they make a gender error (which does happen).

I had always ordered sexed chicks from My Pet Chicken, who never sends anything you don't order - no 'packing peanuts' - and then ordered from another hatchery and was horrified to find in my order of five bantam chicks, ten large fowl male chicks. I was lucky enough to have a friend that was interested in starting in meat birds who took them all. I was neither prepared for nor set up for that many or that kind of birds.

reads the headline on these posts and thinks styrofoam is being used to ship chicks today?

I read the headline on this string and had to read it just to find out what was going on! I knew of many ways of shipping chicks over the last 90 years and many ways to keep the chicks warm and alive. I had never considered using packing peanuts made out of styrofoam as I would assume it could suffocate the chicks generally.

Imagine my relief when packing peanuts are the new slang for putting extra chicks in for warmth during small shipments.

Old man learns anew everyday thanks!

Thank you all for your thoughts and advice! I decided to risk it and not do the packing peanuts (and yes, I was told by an employee there handeling my order that it would be 15-17 peanuts if I decided to go that route) and they arrived safely Thursday morning! I was so nervous, but all of my 8 are doing well. I could not imagine having 17 more to care for right now as a first time chicken owner! I'm glad we chose to not do the peanuts also because it seems so costly to feed all those extra birds! Anyway, just wanted to update you all and let you know packing peanuts were not necessary!
