What to do with this foot?

No. I am in the bay so we can get a bit humid over the night. Plus the ocean is just over the mountain so we can sometimes get the ocean fog.
I was thinking it might happen here when it's a combination of cold AND windy (wind chill and all that).

I miss the Bay. Not the traffic, but the fact that things stay open later!!! LOL!

Sounds about like the 'pest pistol' I've used...wasn't impressed with it, too big for me to operate it one handed...and it either didn't dispense anything or way too much came out.
Tried a stocking too, had wrong kind I think...ended up using gloves and fingers to get dust under feathers. Went to using liquid spray after that.
Similar for sure. The dawn bottle is easy one handed. Gotta admit I stole the idea from someone...just cannot remember who..Iffin it’s you (someone out there) thanks!

Well, the baby powder bottle did work, it was a bit to get it open and there’s actually a couple parts to the lid I used a paring knife to pry it apart. It’s a small travel sized one. The carbaryl powder is a bit heavier so it didn’t poof as well as I would’ve liked, but the small bottle was way easier to handle. I surprised the poor chicken when I didn’t start playing with her feet today. Sneaky human!

I got some flak from the husbands cousin about why the chicken was all by herself in there... didn’t take much of it though... I’m treating her for severe scaly leg mites, she’s walking and standing again and I’m just thankful we haven’t had to amputate any toes. Shut that whole conversation down fast!

And she’s actually WALKING again! So happy for her! And she kept pecking my sleeve aggressively. One toe still looks very bad. I’ll try to get some photo help tomorrow so it is more visible.

Someone posted that Canadians can't get carbaryl anymore, so try not to waste too much (note that I am just repeating what some here said, I have no idea how true it is).

I certainly hope not! I haven’t tried to buy it since June, but it’s a topical pesticide so I was hoping it’s not covered under the new vet med regulations! It is a restricted pesticide that requires a license to use (which we have as a farm) so that may be why the person had problems? I had to argue with the teenage clerk for 20 minutes and fill out paperwork to buy it this summer.

And of course, I jinxed myself by saying we don’t really get freezing temps here... there was a light frost this morning and likely to be one again tonight, currently 4 degrees Celsius outside in late afternoon here.

Happy New Years everyone! I’m so glad you’re all here and willing to share your knowledge and experience with everyone.

That looks very official... I’m going to need to make more trips to the USA I think! See what I can buy at Tractor Supply and if customs will let me back in with it... it’s just INSANE here lately! I don’t care if they remove products or require vet prescriptions... but they have to then find replacement products for the people who rely on these things! And encourage more large animal vets!

I take it the new regulations messed things up for y'all....:hmm

What about ivermectin? If you have cattle, surely you can get the pour on type? I know that the folks here don't use it much for a dewormer, but it still might help with the mites. There's also the benefit of it not having any unintended beneficial bug kill. Just a thought.

We do have some left from last year. It is also no longer available without a vets prescription! The cattle didn’t like it much, so I was worried about it irritating her more delicate skin...

We are having to be very careful in rationing our antibiotics, and won’t have access to the basic vaccine for sheep and injectable selenium we give the ewes before lambing either (we live in a very selenium poor area, and without it the lambs are frequently born with leg and jaw defects despite having it in the feed and in the mineral and salt blocks)

We can’t afford having the one large animal vet to come to our farm... it’s 4 hours of driving, followed by 2-4 hours of ferries (the route changes through the day depending on time) it’s a couple thousand for the farm visit, plus the two days of traveling, plus any treatment and examination x150 ewes... we would have suitable accommodations for his overnight stay though.

If he insists on examining any sick lambs before treatment, by the time we get the vet here it will probably be gone already. We lost 5 lambs last year (that were born alive but didn’t make it). It will be tragic but interesting to see how many we lose this year without access to basic medications we would normally have on hand.

I understand the changes and reasons for them... to stop irresponsible and unnecessary prophylactic use of some medications. But completely preventing access to them and not having any solutions for small farms that can’t afford a vet on retainer feels like a push towards eliminating all but the giants in agriculture. And there’s my rant for the year!

Sorry I digressed a bit there but this problem is very frustrating, as I don’t want to see animals suffer or die due to lack of access to essential medications, or the Farm to go bankrupt due to vet bills for travel. I really don’t know why no one fought these changes harder when they were proposed!
