What to do with this foot?

Pics
If you really want to see how strong your relationship is, renovate your house, or get chickens, if it survives these things you’re set for pretty much anything!
This made me laugh - we are doing both :lau:lau:lau You inspired me to get cracking with my flock before they get any worse, maanged wash and vaseline 7 of them yesterday!!! Love Sunday afternoons!!

So Tippie is still mostly doing well. I didn’t get great photos today, and she wasn’t happy when I took her out, she got very flappy and when I tried put her down on the towel she somehow snapped the nail off her bad toe! Thanks again for the cornstarch info... I got the bleeding stopped quickly. I think the constricted circulation from the scales and the soaking and Vaseline may have weakened the nail.

I trimmed up the rest of her nails to a much better length without any incident. I found what I think might be a lash egg or something, it was rubbery feeling and About 1.5 inches around, off white and sort of more solid than jello. I cut it open, it looked kind of like a swirly boiled egg, but didn’t smell bad. I tried to get a pic... but she tried (and partially succeeded!) eating it. I Vaselined just the hard blackened part near the toenail today.

So, not the best pics... but any thoughts on the toe? How long should I give her before resuming soaks considering the nail injury? Prognosis for the nail? This is the last real problem with her feet... once this toe is resolved I’m going to say she’s pretty much better.

I'd bet that nail was cracked from when it was 'dislocated'.
Glad the corn starch worked, it maybe grow back.
I'd not soak it for a few days at least.

Sounds like a 'lash egg'....which is not an egg at all but hunk of congealed pus from an internal infection of the reproductive system.

Ok... so I’ve been reading up on lash eggs... not a great idea over breakfast but, it’s when I have ATM so, oh well.

Firstly, that’s definitely what it was.
Secondly, ewwww she ate part of it!
Thirdly, it looks like the outcome is near certain death in the next 6 mo to a year.

So, it there any possibility other than Salpingitis? Is there any chance of survival for her? What can I do to help her? No vet that will see her available to me (my cats vet wasn’t really happy about my last request for Amprol) no antibiotics without a vets script? If not, how can I beat keep her comfortable until then?

I’m now looking at my husband and thinking of sending him to the dentist because they will give amoxicillin prescriptions due to his heart condition before treatments... his excuse for not going as often as he should! Also kicking myself for binning the leftovers from my cats last dental work... that vet handed out prescriptions like candy at Halloween!

This is why I dislike treating hens as extensively like this... they are older to begin with, I see a problem, we work on it and I get attached way more to the individual chicken. And then when the inevitable happens it’s a lot harder on me. (I know I’m going to outlive them all, but that doesn’t make it much easier).

Not that I think treating her is wrong or not worth it... it has made her quality of life much better already, and I don’t think she would be alive right now if I hadn’t.

There is a place in California that ships Baytril without a prescription to Canada. Baytril is your best choice when it comes to treating salpingitis. You could try amoxicillin, but the chicken dose is very high, it's 56 mg per pound of body weight twice a day.

This is the place that ships to Canada:

Sorry Kris, it is always horribly disappointing to discover something like Salpingitis :hugs

Some people claim to have cured cases of it - I think there may even be a thread on here - I'll see if I can find it again.

I think the worst part is 'knowing' the end is likely nearer than you would ever have hoped. But, they can live very happily in the meantime!! This, will be something you will handle. And to be honest, I reckon if it is possible to cure it, you will definitely be one of the people who find how to do it!! You've got drive!

Besides that, you know the score. Make the little one as comfortable and happy as you can, which you will:thumbsup and of course 'we' will all be here along the way for some encouragement, guidance, comforting, venting, and whatever else you feel like sharing.
The course of antibiotics could pipe her right back up!

If caught soon enough and treated with proper antibiotics it is treatable. I've successfully treated a few, but I've lost a few too.
