What to feed an adult chukar that has swollen feet and looks scruffy and undernourished

Sorry to be asking so many questions but do you know any body that has black pheasants perfectly a trio of hens and one rooster

If our state agencies that MAN-HANDLE wildlife for killing to the maximum, were not funded on killing licenses we could have so much beautiful LIVING wildlife in our woods to enjoy. We desperately need to go to our legislators and demand a first time democracy and GENERAL PUBLIC FUNDING of state agencies. The majority wildlife WATCHERS already bring 11 times the revenue of killers to our state tax coffers and equal job creation and sales and multiplier effects to the economy despite all the state funding going to promote killing and stocking and destroying natural predators and farming for deer to kill before they are two years old. For heads on walls. Really ??? In 2014?

Everyone should have a neighborhood deer. The old folks along the Big Slough just love this little doe that was found, as a fawn, stuck in the slats of a bridge. She had bite tears on her ears from her mother trying to pull her out. She was brought to my neighbor ( an American Indian who quit killing deer and started rehabbing wildlife ) and he bottle fed her ILLEGALLY. If you get caught helping an orphan fawn, the DNR will hand you a $2000 fine and shoot the little fawn. They do not want people getting to know how sweet their wildlife are - and the PUBLIC PUTS UP WITH THIS.

We need a first time democracy in wildlife STEWARDSHIP. Think about it - if you don't kill wildlife, likely you have never made a decision about bludgeoning them in traps, or shooting them for heads on walls, or destroying them as a trophy.

I write the Madravenspeak living wildlife column as a pro bono project to help wildlife. Much of what I write applies to state agencies ( and federal ) all over this country. We are allowing millions of innocent wildlife to be killed for fun in every state that has any left. Please wake up and organize. My columns can be found here:

Funny that humans categorize and designate certain animals to be killed for consumption, some for labs, some for trophy, some for mangling in traps, some for trawling and emptying the oceans. All this beautiful life. You all should watch the documentary EARTHLINGS in its entirety on you tube. I wish you could watch the documentary CALL TO LIFE ( but you have to buy that one ) - and also check out "Conversations with Great Minds" with Thom Hartmann interviewing Guy McPherson on you tube ( 12 minutes or so ) - McPherson predicts that humans will go extinct in the next 20-30 years and take all life out with us just on the trajectory of the lag time of forty years of carbon and methane spewing as it plays out. We have already triggered many feedback loops that are exponential for sudden transformative and deadly change.

Anyway, while we are here - I plan to fence for as many animals as I can raise together from youth - like the black bear, tiger, and lion cubs that were rescued from a drug dealer while they all were together and very young. They neutered the males and they are all best friends, south of Atlanta. If you google "lion, bear, tiger together", the images will come up. I want to build a similar bear house and take in two bear cubs ( black bears ) and raise them. Wisconsin is killing out its black bears at 5,000 per year, mostly cubs, over packs of dogs and bait all year. If people knew these gentle giants, they MIGHT protect them.

Thanks for the offer of a chukar. I live about a hundred miles southwest of Green Bay, but could drive to pick up a bird. That is very kind of you. I think this is a male if the fourth toey part coming out of the back of his foot is the spur. I am trying to bring him back to health. Would he get on with another male so I do not get into raising them? Or would they fight? He is very skittish. I call him Winston for Winston Churchill because when he is puffed up and healthier he looks very much like the stately, portly gentleman.

I have a digital camera but bought it at a garage sale and I think I need a Nikon program to get pictures into the computer...he is looking a little scruffy just now.

I will talk to Steve about getting a chukar for Winston he has a game farm and take you time with getting some pics good luck

Did you ever talk to your friend about getting another partridge to keep my rescued Chukar company? If the fourth toe coming out of the back of his feet is a spur, then he may be a male. I named him Winston for Winston Churchill since he is fat when he puffs up. Can a male get along with another male because I really do not want to raise young - this is a rescue just to help him out. I did buy him some "game bird" food and he likes sunflower seeds and other bird seed but has not touched the awful GMO corn since he arrived. He does not seem to be much into blueberries, strawberries, bananas, or cranberries. Or bread really - even good multi-grain hard bread. Any suggestions for varying his diet for better nutrition?

Also he pecks the newspaper a lot so I am thinking he needs different bedding in this wooden house shelter?

Thanks.

Patricia

That is great that you took the bird in. I'm from WI also and I ended up adopting a red golden pheasant that was found wondering around a friends house this winter. Learning as I go just like yourself. The people on this forum are full of lots of useful advice. Wish you the best with your new found chukar. Word of warning, once you get one bird they are like tattoos, you're going to want another.
