What to use for chicks bedding?

hearing your chick stories are making me want some, I AM looking, so far I HAVE found rir and I will get some of those to add to my alread rir 9 months old, but I also wanted some other for variety, i will keep looking

If you don't mind washing, I think the only thing you'd need to look out for is loose strings -- they'll try to eat them and possibly choke, or get them stuck in their crops.

This is also what I do with new chicks and it has always worked out really well.
I get kiln dried pine shavings at my local Agway(wrapped in the brown paper).
They are very light and fluffy with no strong pine scent.

Not to hijack, but can indoor/outdoor carpet be used? I cannot keep the pine inside the brooder.

This is what I do. Paper towels are cheap and easy, and you don't have to wash anything. Besides, it's only for a few days (2-3 at my house).

Pine pellets with paper towles over top for the first day or two. The pellets are not nearly as dusty as the shavings are. I used shavings last year when I brooded in the garage and was amazed (not in a good way!) with how much dust made it upstairs into the bonus room.
