What to use for cleaning shavings

Same here...do not scoop poop...just add shavings now and again and let the chickens fluff the stuff searching for BOSS. I also add shredded paper on occasion but most of the bedding is pine shavings.

Keeps the gals warm and toasty and has no bad smells at all....and I have a very sensitive nose for those things.

Here Ive been doing more work than necessary. I do scoop under the roost about once a week since thats where they tend to pile it up. What is BOSS? I have tossed scratch in there and have also fluffed it up with a rake but didnt know you could just toss in more shavings. I put DE down first as well as some lime before I did it but you can toss DE in in between cleaning? I probably will totally clean it out in the spring. One reason I went deep litter and I have a dirt floor is because of the smell. I also put up alot of vanilla car freshners around the coop. Made a difference. Any other suggestions? Thanks for the info!!

BOSS is black oil sunflower seeds.....they love to search for them in the bedding and will have it all fluffed very deeply within a short time after I toss them a couple of handsful. This saves me time and effort and gives them something to do when the ground is too frozen to search and scratch out on the free range.

Oh!! I thought it was some sort of chemical. I will get some. I think you can buy a huge bag at the CO-OP or I know for sure TSC. Thanks, everyone!!!

As soon as I can I am buying pine shavings & putting that down instead. DE is all over the ground now. I think I'm going to have to scour out my nostrils. Yes, I'm a full on city girl.

When you do your semi-annual clean out, where do you put all the debris?

And please tell me the dlm is a lot less stinky

Soooo, does pine shavings smell less than straw and does it compost better? Can I get the pelletized lime AND DE at Home Depot or Lowe's?
