What to use for fleas on a dog....

Shelley..call a vet...they will tell you over the phone. Ask what to use..ask if you can use a drop of advantage or frontline on the pups...or even revolution.
I always ask a vet if i'm not sure, just to be safe.

yes, I agree, and from the vet, not advantage you get online or at a farm supply store, its just not the same thing.

But can you do that when the pups are so young? I thought I'd read warnings on the packages about that

When you treat the mother, they fleas will stay off the babies also. The pups will not have any medication on them but when the mother is treated the fleas will leave the pups alone too.

edit- I use frontline plus

I used to volunteer at the local humane Society. One thing I have learned is NEVER EVER EVER put any FLEA CHEMICALS on NEWBORNS!!!!!!!!!!!! Garlic POWDER (NOT SALT!) is okay but be very light with it.

I put Advantage on Mom also and I do give them a light bath, which s okay with using JOY or DAWN dish soap but be sure to blow dry them IMMEDIATELY afterwards and put them in a VERY warm place.

Mix Avon's Skin-so-Soft with baby shampoo and wash them with that. While you're doing that, wash their bedding in HOT water (fleas can survive in cold) and have someone thoroughly vacuum the floors and furniture.

Hey Shelley... Use DE and Ivormec on Mom and the pups will be fine... Use garlic powder on the pups if necessary but dust everything with DE....

I will be doing my house this weekend with DE since two of our inside dogs came in with some fleas and now the whole inside animal lot has them....

I also use Ivormec on everyone... Cats/Dogs/Goats.... it is the same thing in Revolution just a different concentration... you need to keep that in mind when using it.... I just got a bottle at TSC which will last me quite a while....

Again since you didn't read my response in the other thread apparently. Ivermectin is not, definitely absolutely not, the same thing in revolution. Ivermec is also just a brand name. Revolution is salemectin a related chemical but entirely different with different dosages, different side effects, different margin of error, etc... than ivermectin. Stop spreading misinformation and at least do a google search if nothing else. Ivermectin also only lasts up to 10days while revolution, advantage, frontline will all work for a month and while generally it's safer ivermectin should not be used on certain dog breeds because of an extreme sensitivity. You should also be careful using it with cats for the same reason. Plenty of people on farms have killed their cats by thinking they could just give them a little of the ivermectin products they use on everything else. Livestock, lots of small animals, and humans are very tolerant of ivermectin but some breeds of dog (mostly herding breeds) and cats are not.

I would definitely not put revolution on puppies and probably wouldn't on the mother just because it does have a slightly higher chance of side effects and you can't be as loose with the dosage when compared to plain frontline or advantage. I would not use the advantage multi with moxidectin on anything living but plain advantage on the mom would be fine. A call to your vet would be a good idea. Whether frontline or advantage works better depends on your area. In areas of the country where one was more popular the pests have started to become resistent and those areas are having to switch to the other. Our vets recently went from using advantage all the time for years to frontline. Everyone had advantage and now everyone has frontline. We had to hunt down cat advantage because one of ours throws up frontline. I use the frontline plus on our dogs though because I want to repel ticks and I don't want to touch advantage multi.

I stand corrected.... I guess since my Vet said I could use Ivermectin for my animals instead of the Revolution, I assumed (I know what happens when you Assume), that it was the same thing but different concentration....

I do like Ivermectin since I can get a large quantity at a small cost and am able to treat 5 dogs and 7 cats for less than the cost of Revolution... I do give it every two weeks but it still works out to less than 1 dose of Revolution....

I will not say Ivermectin and Revolution are the same again....

Sorry to have spread mis-information when it was not my intention...
