What treat did your chickies get today?

Its winter bigtime so they only get treats 2x a week or so and today I had big tomatos from bargain cart at huge grocery I go to(paid $1 for 10 monster red tomatos past their prime for most) and I ate a couple and chix got the 2 mooshie ones mixed with romaine lettuce. They go crazy and that area of snow/poop is quite lovely(NOT!).

Mine got oatmeal, left over pancakes, heels from bread, a little rice with veggies, and left over vegan chili. They pigged out!

I worry sometimes that I give my chickens too many treats. I go out to check on them twice a day and most times I bring a treat for them. I have gotten to the point where I buy them food at the grocery store. I think it's getting a bit out of hand!

I wondered today if they are eating too much "other stuff" and not enough layer crumbles. But I am still getting lots of eggs despite the cold, so...

Today they got two small jars of bay food (one turkey, one beef) that my convalescing cat would not touch. They licked the feed pan clean! They also got some apples, leftover taco shells and a head of cabbage.

Um. Wow. Now that I wrote that all down, that's a lot for six chickens.

I got them a bunch of dandelion greens for tomorrow. When they see me approaching with the treat pan, they leap at me. I have to get this on film.

Last weekend they had the tops off of a flat of strawberries. This weekend they had watermelon rhines with a little flesh left on them, of and some apple cores.

When do you find that chickens really start to enjoy treats? Ive fed mine various things since they were ~1 weeks old. They haven't really been excited over anything. *sigh* they peck at almost everything but they just play with it.

mine have only started a month or two ago. they are 9 months old now. I tried bacon at 6 months and they go crazy over it. I do find that I must break the food ip or they five up on it. so everything I give them has been cut up bite size.

I don't give treats to mine till at least after noon and I keep a tray of feed in the coop. that way part of the day all they have is feed.
