So, based on what I have been reading, I dug up a chunk of yard (sod) and plopped it in the brood box.

They went freaking bananas! Picking, scratching, standing on it, laying on it. Was great to watch.

Pattid- hi , we have pretty much cold wet winters from dec to march. If we get lucky some snow but where I live in Cumbria England, not much which is sad. If it does snow everyone freaks out & we run out of grit really quick! Our summer is always a let down, wet . The coldest it's been around -15 degrees below freezing which was grim. I love Autumn & Spring.

I like to give my girls melon grown in the garden. On very hot days I'll freeze them. They get a lot of leftovers, exra garden veggies, leftover greens, dug up veggie plants and of course dried mealworms are a favorite. They loved tearing apart the sunflower plants I threw in to them.

A water melon with seeds a half a loaf of bread, a head of lettuce, popcorn and corn on the cob and leftover scrambled eggs! ALL HOMEGROWN!!!!! Leftovers from the harvest moon the other day!! I love my girls and want them to only have the best! They love treats!! <3

Half a water melon, a peach (no pit) and some saltine crackers! But their favorite things is when I "help" dig up worms in the garden.

Cherry tomatoes. I have two cherry tomato plants that came up volunteer so I save those for "the girls". They love them! Very entertaining to watch them eat as they first pierce the tomato and then "shake it out" to get it of such size to gulp down. Great fun watching them roll and chase them, too.

In the winter I feed mine boiled barley with a good splash of Apple cider vinegar in it. If you put the acv in while it's hot it is absorbed into the grain.
