What treat did your chickies get today?

A bunch of extra tomatoes from the greenhouse. We decided the variety "Silvery Fir Tree" just isn't it for us, so the remaining tomatoes we gave to the girls, and replaced the plant with a couple melon vines.

Today my chickens got their favorite treat - popcorn! (Unsalted, butter free, of course.) Just plain kernels popped in a hot air popper. They go nuts.

Loving the treat ideas I'm getting from this thread! Our five hens got a lot of treats today, which included peaches from our neighbors tree (too ripe for me to eat), mealworms, cucumbers from the garden, tomatoes (I think they're beginning to like them), squishy melon, the green ends of carrots, and the leftover kernals on some cobs I stripped last night.

My poor chickies only got a few grapevines (leaves only, no grapes). They still love them though.

Today we had an apple & mealworms, that's all we had!! Time to shop tomorrow!! This morning they had a wet peice of wheat bread! They love that!!

My Black Aussies go crazy over radish greens! Everytime I pluck a handful and toss in the run, they will literally climb up one another's back to get at the greens. Radishes themselves cut into peck-and-eat sized wedges are close behind as a (fruit/veggie) chicken treat.

I found a hapless beetle-type insect on its back in the dirt of my garden the other day - it was oval shaped, thicker than my thumb, mass the size of a silver dollar (about 2" long) and green/orange stripes running the length of its back and wings.

I scooped it up with a shovel and tossed it into the run.

First Aussie to the insect grabbed it in one fatal peck, and then ran zig-zagging around the run, like a tight end trying to evade the rest of the "defensive end" chooks until it could crunch and consume the prize...

Fun to watch - a classic "ChookTV" episode that has doubtless been repeated many times over hundreds of years!

A mixture of grains that I used to make a Russian Imperial Stout, and some cabbage leaves, which they love.

The grains, 20 pounds worth, will last for a about a week before it starts to go bad (I then put the grain into the garden). I often mix the grains with hot water and add left over feed and egg shells - makes for some happy chickens.
