What type of chicken?

Anyone have these? I bet it is a cross as it was wild. Is it useful for anything?

Whats a Production red? you mean the things that were sold to me as RIR?

American Gamefowl hens are VERY useful as broodies to hatch out chicks, they're very good, protective moms, and they're also good for people who free range or pasture their hens. They're an extremely smart breed.

A Production Red is the term given for hatchery quality Rhode Island Reds (most of them out there) It is given because normally RIR's were supposed to be meaty, dual purpose breeds, however hatcheries have over-bred them to be strictly production laying hens with thin, small bodies and dull orange plumage.

Oh thanks for the reply. So the red Productions are RIR just like "worst" versions only for egg laying?

Actually a Production Red is a crossbred of Rhode Island Red and New Hampshire!

Well then I guess to your opinion, sure. But originally and especially if you talk to Heritage breeders, that's what they are. Considering most Production Reds are just as likely to be crossbreds as New Hamp x RIR's are.

And no, I am not looking for another argument on RIR's.

To reply to the question, they're not exactly "worse," so long as you like what you have and just want eggs.

Actually a Production Red can be either a bird bred solely from the Rhode Island Red (with out any crossing) for egg production in doing so they lost the body size, body type, over all color and temperament of a true R.I. Red or they can be a Rhode Island Red with Leghorn blood added, by adding the Leghorn blood they again lost the body size, body type, over all color and temperament of a true R.I. Red.

Now some hatcheries are claiming that there New Hampshire/Rhode Island Red cross is a, "Production Red" but they (the chicken) is little more than a New Hampshire/Rhode Island Red cross.
You can look at it this way, The New Hampshire was bred solely from the R.I. Red with no out side blood added. The New Hampshire was bred for a more meat type breed that still had some egg production.

So with that being said how could a New Hampshire/Rhode Island Red cross be considered a egg production breed?

What would i get if i bred my EE rooster with a RIR or Production red? Would i get another EE?

Its def a game hen...not an old english, but a Modern Game hen, they have the slate blue legs. Mine is a red pyle but she has the SAME body type. Very flighty, however she lets no one boss her around, even for her small size she is one of my birds on top of the pecking order. And she got friendly to me once she started laying, but only to me. NO WAY will she let anyone else come near her or pick her up. She is a "one woman" bird.
