So I really want a pet dog we have five hens, a rooster, a duck, and some cats. I just want it for myself but I wanted to know what dogs would be good with the other animals. I don't want a fluffy dog at most medium fur but I do want a big one. Would a German Shepard be good with them or a Doberman? Oh, we live in a trailer and we have a pretty big yard. I am willing to take it on long walks and play with it a lot. It's also really hot where we live but we have massive oak trees that can keep it cool. Also we have no kids I'm the youngest at 14 and no seniors living with us.

The key to the best type of dog is absolutely, positively training... high prey driven dogs are best avoided, herding type dogs are a good choice... but they *must* be properly trained... and any excess energy worked out on a regular basis... if you aren't familiar with proper training, look into that first... find classes near you, read up in books (I recommend Temple Grandin's books) and develop a training program first...

Good luck! A good, trained dog is worth it's weight in gold... but an untrained one is only worth the cost of a bit of lead... j/s...

High prey drive dogs are make awesome dogs and can be trained to avoid barnyard fowl.

Sounds like a LAb might be the ticket.

collies are amazing dogs. Loyal, protective, and sweet. Mine didn’t even need training to leave the chickens alone. He and a cockerel named chickie are buddies and like to follow each other around. Beau keeps away predators, and never ever tries to hurt the chickens. Collies are the number one best dog with chickens. Bonus? They are extremely smart and friendly with people of all ages.

I have a big German Shepherd- he was 7 when I got chickens... he’s very well trained but still needed about 3 days of supervision and corrections to be good off leash with the chickens free ranging. He’s awesome now! He doesn’t even try to kill the roosters when they go after him. :)
