What type of hawk is this?

That's what I was going to say. A kestrel is much smaller. It's a Red Shouldered hawk. The love chicken salad.

I think it is a broad-winged hawk. It is a buteo, not an acciptor. Head appears large relative to body and coloration from that angle is correct. It is quite a bit smaller than red-shouldered and red-tailed hawks and goes after small stuff. Even a bantam is too big for this guy to target.

Appears to be a red-shouldered....you can positively ID them by their absolutely raucous calls (very distinct, look up a sound bite online).

It's got a red breast and shoulders and bands on the tail.

If it was a Red-tailed Hawk, it would have a distinctive belly band of darker feathers.
