What type of paint is safe to use inside a coop?

Hello,

We just had our new coop delivered yesterday. Well, it's actually an 8x12 shed that we are converting into a coop. It came with a wood floor, and after reading some older posts decided to paint the floor and then get an 8x12 sheet of vinyl flooring to go over the top (really intrigued by the Black Jack #57 too, but the paint and vinyl sounds easier). One thing I can't find is which paint I can safely use in the floor (and also the walls) that won't be toxic to the chickens... I remember when I was a kid, my parents painted our house and my three parakeets died, so I'm a little nervous! Any advice is greatly appreciated!

If you are gonna lay the vinyl I wouldn't paint the floor. The vinyl will peel up the paint and become next to useless. As for the paint I would just ask wherever you plan on buying the paint I would just use same kind you would for a bedroom.

I use barn paint. I figure, if it's safe for a barn, it must be safe for animals.

Good point about the paint under the vinyl...I hadn't thought about that! Well, that saves me some work! Barn paint makes sense, and so does interior latex...but I'm wondering how durable the interior paints would be? Also, where do they sell paint made for barns?

It's just an exterior paint, latex paint isn't real durable so the barn paint would last longer. Any hardware store would have it. And if color is not a big deal they usually have mess ups which are sold at a discount

Thanks for all the advice! We were able to get an 8x12 vinyl remnant for less than $40 and then sealed the edges for the flooring. I'll have to go back today and see of there is any clearence paint that I can use on the walls to make the space more cherful Here's a picture of how the flooring turned out...

It's too late now, but what can be easier than just dumping a big puddle of the roofcoat on the floor and pushing it around with a roller? No measuring, no cutting and fitting required. Not to mention, no painting of the floor to start with. But one thing though, the roofcoat isn't as pretty as the wood grained vinyl.

Jack, if the vilyl doesn't work out, I'll definitely try the Black Jack #57. We didn't glue the flooring, so we can easy pull it up if we need to. We just nailed it in a few places with roofing nails and the caulked the edges. I had read a number of your previous posts on the topic, but not having worked with roofing materials, I was a little scared off LOL
