What Type of quail?

Gambels Quail are different from California Quail. Two different species of quail.

Gambels are a pretty quail and have the most delightful call! Cute little top knot. They are pretty skittish however and if you have never kept quail, I would not recommend starting with Gambels.

What do you need to know about them?

I just want to know something about them because I have little quail that roam around my neighborhood in henderson, nv. The next time I see them I will post a picture. There is one male and one female both have a feather on their head though....

Both the California Quail and the Gambels Quail reside in Nevada. The Gambels have more grey on them and less streaking on their sides than the California. They can be hard to distinguish between the two.

When I used to live down the in the deserts of New Mexico, (I am now up in the mountains of NM) the Gambels would come clean up under the wild bird feeders. These little quail are a bit tame around humans and will come into your yard. I would sprinkle out some extra seeds if the wild birds had eaten all that had fallen beneath the feeders. The quail would all come out from the brush, in a single file, top knots bobbing, LOL, calling with their cute calls, LOL and scurry around eating bird seed. I was fascinated with them. I still drive down into the deserts to see and hear them.

California Valley aka: Californian, Californian Valley, or just Valley.

Another Valley, see the the "yellow" area between the beak and the white stripe by the top knot? That's the easiest to tell the difference between Gambel's and Valley...Gambel's will be black there.

Not a very good pic but this is a Gambel's

"Gambel's quail" is spelled with an apostrophe buy the way, they are named for the guy who discovered them... William Gambel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Gambel

I finally got a picture there was two of them and there was about 20 babies, they were like little yellowish cotton balls!
