Possibly a wolf spider? It's about an inch and a half long. Found it in my tennis shoe on the deck by the kitchen door. I'd seen it on the side of the house before. Can't find my nature guide right now and I tried to ID it on the web, but can't find one that seems exactly like it.

I don't think it's a Wolf Spider. The ones around here are brown.

It looks like your Barred Rocks had a little afair with a spider [IMG]

    In your shoe! [IMG]

I'm no expert but it looks to me like a common barn/house spider.

Ahh, beautiful spider! I was skimming over this post, Cyn, and looked over at the table and noticed my North American Wildlife book so I decided to check it out! Not many spiders, unfortunately, but I think you might be right with Wolf Spider. The legs taper off right and the book says " Body somewhat elongated; often dark brown and patterned; Usually no web" Sounds about right!

I think I know what it is because I have them in my barn here in Indiana. They are called a dock spider. a cousin of the wolf spider. Difference is they lay a nest and guard it where as the wolf spider has a nest sac and carries her's on her under belly. Way more than you probably wanted to know. When resting they lay flat with legs spread out and they can get huge! We joked about shooting them with a b b gun..
I am so afraid to go into the barn cause they stay right above the doorway. I threw a rubber bucket at one and it fell and ran across the barn floor.
I later looked above the door and it was back up there! They can be aggressive if you mess with their nest.
Last year was first sighting this far north.
