what vey best full size broody hens & make great mothers

I now have a gold lace gold lace wyandotte setting on eggs & every now & then there is a silver lace wyandotte . in there instead , & , I have a black australorp setting , & , I do not know what it is it has a beard , feather legs & 5 toe's setting on eggs ,
Wyandottes are supposed to make decent mothers, and the one australorp we had go broody was an awesome mother. Your unidentified bird--can you post a picture? That sounds like a satin silkie (silkie cross) to me.

It depends a lot on the individual whether she will make a good mother.

Beard, feather legs, 5 toes sounds like a Faverolle - they come in several color patterns. Some pics here http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGD/Favs/BRKFaverolles.html

I'm so glad you asked! :wee

I see more people suggesting Silkie's... and I have to say... they've got NOTHING on my full size ladies.. and aren't even that GOOD of mom's in my personal opinion even if they are excessively broody!

Let's face it Silkie's can't raise that many chicks to full term, especially large fowl. Most I can suggest is 4 LF chicks per broody Silkie. Where as my HATCHERY barred Rock can EASILY rear 9+ chicks and she is one of the BEST moms ever, never left a chick behind and never lost one either! My French Black Copper Marans are very broody and very good mums. I even sell them out of my flock if too broody. Silkies, for lack of a better phrase... just aren't the brightest crayon in the box. So being able to raise twice as many chicks or more and have them be WELL taught is worth having a LF broody in MY experience.

My Cochin was sweet enough, but not the brightest and never went broody. Don't even have them in my flock anymore, it hard to impress me. :hmm

Don't get me wrong... my Silkie's are GREAT mama's (mostly)... but my LF are just better equipped in MY opinion. 2 Separate Silkie's lost a chick each to predators last week. For one that was her only chick and she was back to laying the next day and will be broody again before 3 weeks is up guaranteed... like clock work.

My friends Red Sex Link... did great hatching and raising LF chicks last year. :p

Good luck whatever you decide. They are all quite a sight to behold. :love You just have to decide what suits you best and work towards it... broody bred out blah, blah... meh... I see stuff ALL the time. Maybe not common but yes, even leghorns go broody and successfully raise chicks on occasion. Though I wouldn't expect it and would personally be disappointed if they did.
