I don't think decorative taste has made it as far as the ranch yet. Some people have imported it, others think they have. When we moved into this house, the bathroom had a forest green sponge effect on a white background over every surface. It would give you a seizure if you looked at it too long. The floor was blue, and the toilet and sink are yellow.
Two of the bedrooms were painted with a dark blue band around the bottom up to about 3', then a foot or so of white, then another smaller band of blue. And our front room had 70s wallpaper that was metallic gold, bronze and copper maple leaves overlayed.
The house next door is far worse though. The daughter's bedroom has alternate walls of brown and fuschia, with a light fitting made up of several small lampshades covered in zebra, leopard and giraffe print, with jade green fur around the bottom

They painted over the light switch plates in every room, and they are now chipping and scratching and look horribly tacky. And when they painted the kitchen dark green and the hallway bright red, they slipped and painted the ceiling and just left it that way.
The worst is a now abandoned house, I wonder why! One bedroom is chartreuse with an orange sponge effect over the top. Another is purple, and the third is lime green.
We're moving to a bigger house here in a month or so, and luckily with the exception of the sponge stencilled purple and pink butterflies and flowers in one bedroom, the rest of it is painted boring old white. I think my husband needs that room as his man cave.
