What would steal an egg AND a golf ball

While I like this explanation better, I have to agree with the snake wearing the muffler-I can't think of anything else that would take fake eggs/golf balls.

Ravens stole 4 rubber eggs from inside my coop last Spring. I saw one exiting with an 'egg', so know it was him/her. Rats have bitten gouges out of one of my replacements (in the hedge where two hans lay).

The former incident happened by day, the latter probably by night 'cos I didn't see it happen.

if it were warmer my vote is on a snake. the golfball doesnt usually kill them, they can regurgitate well, and do so in a position of stress. my friend caught 2 water mocassins in her koi pond with a goldfish on a hook. they cant regurgitate the hook!

Sorry, but I would have to vote snake as well.

Remember that rat snakes are great climbers and can get to roof tops and can get into rafters where heat accummulates in some coop designs. They can also get under areas to stay warm as well.

I know a coon couldn't have done it because he would have made lunch out of the chickens too, not to mention the fact that the coop is closed except for a pop door into an enclosed run. I am setting a rat trap today to see if I have any takers just to eliminate that possiblility, although I have not seen any indication of infestation. I did put three golf balls out there to encourage those belly aches.
Thanks for all the feedback. Some of it was hilarious.

About 4 years ago a friend of mine and I were coon hunting and walking to the tree where the dogs were treed , a rabbitt jumped up in front of us and ran down the path we were walking on to get to the dogs , it ran about 100 feet and around a corner on the path and was caught by a rattle snake ( huge one ) the temp was about 20 degrees that nite ice all over the place and that snake still was out and caught the rabbit. Don't let air temp stop you from looking for a snake .

Do you have any pictures of your coop and nest box set up?

I have found my golf balls out of the nest boxes because the chickens kicked it out. Maybe a chicken kicked it out and is under your coop bedding???

And the missing egg could be from an egg eating chicken??
