What would you do with the low income of this nation?

Me too surprisingly....

And for reference, I'm a low income part of the nation according to government income standards. But yet I just handled and armed robbery, major car accident with injuries, two suspicious persons, as well as a multitude of public complaints that have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with police activity, and yet me and my coworkers will all be back at work again tomorrow for more 'abuse'.

We really should get paid a heck of a lot more than we do...

But seriously, I do agree with V T Chick-lit on many many points ~ worrying about our OWN is far more important to me than feeding the world. Yes, it's sad that there are starving kids in Africa, but we must look to our own first.

That said, so many people think that they just have to have SO MUCH. Poverty does exist here in in America, it's true, but you CAN live on $20k a yr ~ about 2 1/2 yrs ago, ( when we first went into business for ourselves) we barely skimmed by on $11K. Yes, I had to cook almost exclusively from scratch, yes, we had no insurance ( still don't, in fact ~ instead we have a special fund that we put $$ into, for medical emergencies... doesn't cover life & death, but it does cover general things), it's also true we had almost no money to buy things with, almost every single cent went to bills, mortgage, gas, & food. The kids didn't get new school clothes, shoes or coats, we ate beans & homemade bread, and very little else.

All that said, & guess what? $11K a year still gets you * A house, * 2 old cars & the gas & insurance to run them, * food for 5 kids & 2 adults, *a medical bill, *family evenings spent together, *cell phone, *internet, & * a library card for each family member.

Yes, it was hard, sometimes times are still tight, however, we never went on any type of welfare. Instead, we worked hard to get more work, saved, spent far beneath our means, & stayed out of debt, both personally & with the company. Could this happen for everyone? Probably not ~ I have to admit that God blessed us far more than we ever deserved.

I should also add, however, that my husband & I do not have credit cards, bought a house that could be paid for easily, have old cars that we bought with cash, started a business with only tools, talent, & a reputation for good work, & my husband has never allowed us to buy anything on time or with credit, except for our home. So we did not start out with debt, either.

No, I'm not trying to brag, I'm just pointing out that it IS possible to live on less than $20K, I know from personal experience. It isn't easy, it takes a lot of will power & you don't have a lot of things that other folks have. But it CAN be done.

Redhead- I totally agree with you... We need to take care of our own first and everyone can definitely live on less than 20k a year.

When you think about it, a family can be completely self sufficient on just a few acres of land. I have access to a lot more than just a few acres and am planning on something I wish I would have done years ago.

As far as people living below their means. I don't think most people could do that either. I overheard a cashier in a store talking to a guy about people living in tents now because they can't afford rent. Her reply was, "I ain't livin' in no stinkin' tent!" I thought to myself, "You would if you had too and would probably still complain about it."

Entertainment is a big thing for people. I believe most people would go in debt just to get tickets to a football game or borrow against their house to get a luxury vehicle.

If you can't tell, I don't have much faith in people. LOL
