Thats why I have 4 dozen production red and barred rock eggs in the bator. Half the people at th swaps/sales I go to are looking for reds, domineckers, or black sexlinks. I took a couple of young olive egger roos to the auction yesterday, $3 each

, there where some red hens there, $14 each, and there where about 20-25 of them and one person bought them all.
So Ive got a red rooster to put with red and barred hens to make reds and sexlinks, I dont care for these because they are the "everyday" ones, but thats what everybody wants, so I'm going to have a pen for them. Half of the order tractor supply gets every week when they have chicks are "red pullets", usually the first ones gone, besides the ducks.

It is the same way here. The only thing that sells decently at auction are the 4-H red sex links. The only "decorative" breed that sells well here is silkies. They go for way more than anything else. Guineas also bring a high price. ??? I am adding guineas this year. I can't go silkies. It wouldn't pay me to make my own red sex-links because so many are available from the 4-H kids, and I don't want to take any of their profit from them. I'm hoping I can increase the interest in some of the original heritage RIR's.

Guineas at auction here go for $10-$15 each. Silkies go for $5-$15 each here. Fancy breeds sell pretty good here.

I forgot to mention games sell for big bucks, but I have small grandchildren. Not going with anything that will fight to the death or possibly injure someone/thing. I am breeding for temperament. If it is nasty to someone, it will taste good.

I completely agree, I do not tolerate mean nasty animals here. I have put a breeding turkey in the freezer due to him being nasty mean and attacking my kids and me. I refuse to sell nasty birds. I believe they belong in the freezer.

Here no one seems to want fancy breeds. I bred my lav and buff orps together and the chicks sold like hotcakes Better then Buffs. I kept a pair for a while to see what their chicks looked like and then sold them all. Everyone wants pullets but they only want to pay $15 dollars still. With feed prices it costs more then that to raise them.

I was going to buy Rhodebars, some Orp's, and a couple of other things from Greenfire Farms. DH has talked me out of it each time I have tried to hit the order button. He says I will never make my investment back on them, wait until people calm down and then buy what I want. The problem for me is waiting....
The LC Orp's I am glad he did, b/c I just got a really good deal on an adult trio. I just have to go and pick them up. Now I just have to hunt out people with the other ones I want who do not have orders a mile long or do not want 15.00 an egg for them.

Feed prices keep going up, and every "newbie" wants hens at point of lay!!! I have rescued 5 roos and 1 hen from a lady getting evicted. They're all silkies, which I don't really care for, but I don't butcher (weanie), so I'm trying to give them away. If only there was a button on them to change them into hens, I'd keep them all.

I hatched out 4 GLC LF, got 3 roos and 1 pullet. I hatched out 4 NN x Appenzeller Spitzhaubens, I got 3 roos and 1 pullet.

Post a free CL add or take them to an auction, if you are have them. I can sell roosters for $1. Beats feeding them. And is they don't have some good breast meat on them, it is not worth processing.
