WHAT YA GOT SWAP Chat Thread

I wish our auction prices were that good! The one 2 hours away is supposed to run bare dirt prices. The one here (half an hour away), it really depends on the day. I bought the BBW turkeys at $3.25 a piece, pekin eggs for $2.25, and other eggs go as low as ten or twenty five cents per dozen (for unmarked eggs) and a few bucks for "pure". Roosters? Eh. That all depends. Many roosters are just bought up by the two meat dealers, but some of the pretty ones go for a good bit. Rabbits are crazy. They can go anywhere from $2-$65! I bought my original breeding stock of californians (a buck and four does) for $3.25 each. After we move, I'm going to start throwing eggs at the incubator, so I have a reason to hit the auction, lol.

I've gone to one auction and stayed for about 15 minutes. I would have been too scared to bring something home because I have no idea about the health. same thing about going to a poultry show...am I too paranoid? I dunno. I have gotten really attached to my chickens. it would kill me if I brought something home that wiped them out.

do they do heath checks at all?

I took 8 roosters to the auction today. I got $7.00 each for the old used up roos and $6.50 each for 4 month old nothing but bones roos. I couldn't figure it out. I figured $1.00 each and I would not have paid that for them. All in all I came away a pretty happy camper with the prices today. It is always a pretty sure bet that I don't buy birds at the auction so I came back with empty cages and money for feed. I got $2.75 each for quail, $5.00 each for mixed breed ducks, and sadly $9.75 each for 3 Sebastopol smooth splash ganders.

I tried and tried to sell the Sebs on Craigslist and this is just not goose country. Everyone that knows what they are wanted curly Sebs so I did not have space for three more ganders in my breeding pens and they had to go. The person that bought them was a reseller for another auction and he didn't know what they were. He kept telling his buddy they were Pilgrims and I didn't correct him.

Aside of the geese..those are REAL good prices. I bring my roosters to the local auction, some days I can get $5...most of the time $1-2.

But I am not feeding them.....

No health check for the small animals at the auction. There is a vet there for large animals. I have only purchased a couple of things over the years at the auction and they were put in quarantine for four weeks once they got home. I am a pretty good judge of animal health but you still never know.

Actually just going to an auction or poultry show we can pick up things on are shoes and clothing that can be transmitted at home. I try not to go overboard since I know things can also be carried in on wild birds or just the wind.

lol...yeah, when I left I went to the store and bought lysol and sprayed down my shoes and the car matts.

no paranoia here...nope....LOL

My auction does vet checks. Unless you bring your NPIP paperwork. They test the birds that come in. So we are safe at our auction.

Not sure how other auctions run, but the one and only that I go to test. Even at the swap meets we go to they test the birds.

Some do, all the ca ones test, and shows test. But you cant catch everything, its just a few basic swab tests.

I Bleach anything that comes home from a show or auction, tires, shoes, pants, everything. i assume I'm bringing stuff home from shows, its like bird kindergarten. They take birds away that look sick, but the birds at shows all look healthy, its just the ones the shipping or traveling brings out stress diseases.

But yeah, wild birds are worse then shows and you cant get rid of them....
