Way to turn employees against each other Mr. Donkey Butt Caroline's boss. That is just one of the most outrageous things I've heard in regards to letting people go, or implying that people will be let go.
As a Boss at work...we might be looking at layoffs..The way I base who might get laid off is their contributions
How have they used their sick or vaca time-how reliable are they-how good are their work ethics etc...If I had to base it on who i don't like to work with half my staff would be gone! LOL They may have grumpiness in their blood but dang if they are not the hardest working people! They are some of my oldest employees too..
well there are 6 people in my office. 1 has been here 6 years, one 4.5, i have been there 4, another girl maybe 4 months, and a just hired girl of less than 1 month, oh yeah and the bosses wife.
so he cuts my hours back and the one of 6yrs to 35.
he gives the girl of 1 month a list of hours he wants for the holiday Monday night after the schedule was made out the week before and tells her to have the one of 6yrs fix the schedule and then also tells her that she doesn't have to have her hours cut and if they do that she can come to him and he will get them to fix it.
he is just pretty awful- when he was hiring the new girl he told me not to hire smokers because we already have 2 of those, no obese people, and no crippled or old people.
he cut my hours back 5 hrs a week because I didn't fill out deposit slips how he does.
I am now to use only the fronts- cross off cash and subtotal, etc basically all the words on the front and write all the checks on the front and don't carry over to the back- and i have to use carbon paper to copy the deposit slip onto another one - and not to make a copy of the checks cause thats a waste of paper- he's paranoid that i am cashing checks and or not depositing them- um how can i cash anything? they have the company name on them.
He wont lay people off cause he doesn't want to pay unemployment. he will screw with you until you quit. If he was going to cut back and lay people off I would just like to be told and then be gone. he doesn't have to do it the way he does.
The girl just above me in time- has used all her sick and holiday time. is gone a lot from work calls in or leaves early, pretty much chooses her schedule- and the boss adores her so she gets away with it.
oh and i have used my 2 holidays he gives us a year paid and i still have sick time left. and i come to work on time and work whatever scheduled times they schedule me for and i have only called in 2 xs this year. and just 2 months ago he was complementing me... oh well i need another job is what it really is.
I went thru something like that several years ago. My best friend and co-worker was witnessing things going on at work and finally turned it in. It was the manager and his wife that was doing most of it. Well, since he couldn't cut her hours they just gave her the silent treatment. I backed her up because I was seeing it too (i was the assistant manager), so he cut my hours back to 2 hours a week trying to get me to quit. I worked those 2 hours then because I had just gotten custody of my grandson and was the only one working I filed for unemployment. Next thing I know the supervisor was having a talk with me asking why I filed. I told him exactly why. He proceeded to ask more questions as to what was going on in the store and I told him. He then asked me what hours I wanted and if I was to get them would I stop the unemployement checks. Of course I would because I wouldn't need them. He went and had a talk with the Manager and next thing I know I had my hours back. After a few months he apologized for how he acted (sincerely). I told him before when he cut my hours that I know how things work and he's not gonna make me quit, so I reminded him again. He never tried to cut my hours again. If I wanted to work some evenings I got it but I was mostly dayshift because of my grandson. I got off work in time to pick him up from aftercare at school. I worked a few extra hours on a weekend to make up my 40 hours.
If you don't let them push you around, eventually things will smooth out. Just hang in there and don't let him intimidate you. Surely he has a boss. If he's being unethical maybe his boss may need to know. Maybe he's the one that needs to get laid off.

Unless thats on paper or recorded or several people heard it reporting it would be bad for her. He would most likely make her life at work a living you now what. If she was the only person he said that to it could be bad for her. But if it's on paper there is proof and a copy of it could be sent to several people in the chain of command so it don't get over looked including the labor board. Thats the bad thing about reporting somebody for unethical behavior at work. You need proof to protect yourself just for reporting it. Thats why so much goes on in the work place. Not many people either want to loose their jobs, tolerate retribution, or are willing to take it to what ever level necessary to get the problem resolved. They would rather just go to work, do their job and go home with a paycheck on friday. I'm not saying anything is wrong with that either. Sometimes it's best to stay out of it if it don't directly effect you or is physically hurting others. Messing with my paycheck though is one of the biggest mistake somebody can make. The reason most people work is for that paycheck and they can't afford to have their hours dropped or be given a hard time.
It all depends on if there is proof to back up the statement. Maybe she can ask him to send her a memo with exactly what he don't want her to hire. There may be a way to get him to put it on paper. Just a thought. Bosses like that shouldn't be a boss. It's like one hiring all well endowed pretty women that wear skimpy cloths. Or visa versa, it's illegal and just plain wrong.
Ok, i'm rambling again. I'm bored waiting for the aid to get here so I can go run errands.
Ditto what Em said. I saw a case go to the eeoc of a middle aged male company owner who was having inappropriate relations with more than one under age employee and they didn't do a thing.
I just stay out of it there is no other chain of command just the boss/owner and one time i went to the labor board and i was told i would need lots of proof and then he could still fire me because i forget what term they said but basically NY is an "at will" state. so he doesn't need a reason to fire anyone or reduce hours etc.
