I have a question? I have bantam Marans, but I am not happy with the egg color. they lay a really light brown egg. To get darker eggs which would be better to use: Standard Maran roo or Standard Maran hen. Or a differant breed.

What are they. Where did you find big chicks for sale? They look very healthy.

Healthy, yes. So far! I had some concerns about the place they came from and the young man running this chicken hatching enterprise but they seem to be well cared for and most surprisingly, they're friendly as if they've been handled. He's got at least 8 different breeds he's selling right now. These are supposed to be speckled sussex, listed as sotted sussex!, which I've been wanting to get, and an ameracauna (sp?), which I never wanted but it was such a pretty color and had such a sweet face, I couldn't resist. Besides, my guy, who is still up north taking care of his mother had mentioned once that he might think a chicken that laid a colored egg was worth having. He's going to be very surprised when he comes home to find four more! Teach him to leave me to my own devices!

One looks like a roo (the one in front) but I am no expert LOL. All four are lovely! My DH stop counting and trying to memorize what chickens I have. I snuck in about eight breeds. Just said they must have been from suprise eggs peeps sent or that DGD beg me to buy them.

I've seen a couple auctions for bantam Barnevelders, don't they lay dark eggs? Maybe you could contact a few marans breeders and ask if they have any underweight/smaller birds you could possibly use. I think it would be best to stick with the same breed, possibly even color, it wouldnt take as long to get them back to the right size. I don't know about which gender to use though, have you asked on the Marans thread?

Ameraucana, I have some Lav eggs in the bator! I like to have an egg rainbow! I have white, cream, tan, light brown, brown, green, olive and blue, only missing speckled and dark brown, but I just ordered some Black Penedesenca eggs, so now all I need is speckled. The Malays don't count because only one hens egg has just a tiny bit of speckling, I want some polka dotted eggs. ;)

So the LF Maran roo on my bantam hens will really mess up the size a lot. That stinks. I am not sure how to get darker eggs then. I don't really want to introduce a differant breed on them I think that would mess it up worse. But maybe I am wrong. If I did mess with it would a roo or hen be best to mess with. For size issues.
