I am really wanting to get some this spring. I remember when I was smaller, my dad and me raised quail and ring neck pheasants but I couldn't remember what we fed them. I am working on quail pens now, well kinda of if the weather would ever let up.

I had quail for several years and I fed them regular chick starter till they started to lay then switched to regular layer crumbles. They love to toss food out of their feeders. The ones I had wasted more feed than what they ate. Thats why I don't have them anymore. I made some quail feeders out of bleach jugs that helped them not waste so much feed. They could get their heads in but couldn't get their bodies in to scratch out the feed. But they still managed to waste some by tossing it out with their beaks.
no more quail em?? that used to be your big thing! They are wastrals, I started an experiment with them. I have feeders they jump in that have a brick for them to stand on in the middle so they cant toss the whole thing on its side AND they cant scratch the feed out. They do poo on the brick, but waste much less feed.

Bobwhites require permits to do anything with them besides eating them, at least in PA. Coturnix are more worthwhile for eggs and meat (good conversion rate, quick to maturity for both eggs and meat). Buttons are cute, lay well, but are more for sales than anything, though you can certainly eat the eggs if you wish.
