Thats terrible about the quail. I will think twice about getting some also, I won't be raising cornish X in the summer again, that's for sure. Very stressful worrying about them. And all I wanted to do this afternoon was sit in the airconditioning and drink a "frosty mug", but instead, I was processing 6 cornish X that were on their way out. Oh well, that's farming, have to rely on things we can't control. All of my laying hens were fine, which makes me think I will be getting dual purpose breeds for meat from now on.

So sorry to hear some have lost birds to the heat........hopefully it will cool off at least a bit and soon

I lost 9 chicks today. They were 12 weeks old. i had fresh water, fans, and water for them to stand in, like every run i have. The others in different runs were panting, but none died. It got to 110f here today.

I just went out and picked my yard chicken out of her kennel where she sleeps. I was watching her all day and she seemed fine. She felt hot, so I dunked her in the goat trough. When I put her in the pen in the barn she couldn't stand up! So I took her and dunked her again. I have her sitting in a shallow pan of water in the garage with a fan on her. Now I know she had cool water all day and she was in the shade running loose. This heat is brutal. I hope she makes it. She is an old coronation hen I rescued , and I have become quite fond of "Cora".

Today my friend, in the next town over, lost 10 of her birds.

Of the two that were left, one was a leghorn and the other was a Hamburg. She's thinking the two lighter weight birds could handle it better. The ones she lost were marans, EE, RSL, RIR, and silkie. The bank in town said 117 today. My car was bouncing between 116-118. Today was supposed to be the hottest, then it's supposed to cool off into the lower 100's for the next week or two.

So far I haven't lost any.

I do wonder if the high temps will affect the eggs my broody is setting? Does anyone know? She's a little oegb and is setting on 6 BCM eggs. She's been rotating them out, so she's trying to regulate them. They are due to hatch this weekend. Anyone?

Shelly
