Need some advise from a quail expert ASAP:

My group just came of age this week, all the boys are crowing and the girls are starting to lay (19 total quail). I have been marking the males as they crow to help identify them. Yesterday I noticed one of the suspected girls had a big gash on her head almost like she was being scalped. This morning I now see three with the same thing and all are suspected girls and one has damage to her eye. Can someone explain?? Too many males, hen dominance or something else. There is NOTHING they can be hurting themselves on so I suspect it's bird to bird related??

I agree with anderson. It sounds like you may have too many males with your hens and they are getting injured from them. They will pluck them bald and make them bleed. I learned that the hard way myself. I have 4 boys in with 15 girls. I don't have any problems anymore with the plucking or bleeding. Not sure how many males you have and how many girls but that is where I would start is taking a couple guys out.

Also edited to add: It could be a rogue male. Meaning a male that is just way too rough. I had one that was killing my other males and tearing up my girls. He was just a nasty little bugger. Needless to say we processed him. That could be a problem also.

By the way I don't consider myself and expert either just learning expieriances I have had here. Let us know how it turns out.

O.k., just pulled all the males out, there are 11 girls and 8 boys total. We left the only white male in the ladies for the moment and watching to see if I missed any other males, so far he is the only one crowing. In the pen with all males we did find one that all the others are afraid of and kept trying to get away from. Took him out and all the other males settled nicely, My rouge male!

so, with 11 females how many males can I keep 2 or 3?? Going to be listing the others on CL today all but a couple as back up.

I also learned the hard way. Chewed up and scalped hen.... Took it down to 2 males and 8-9 females and all was well. I would think 2 males is good. Thats 5 1/2 girls a piece.
