Wow, Ive missed sooo much on this thread, I'm never going to catch up!
I'm going to try to get this posted before BYC logs me out AGAIN or my laptop shuts itself down AGAIN!
Look what hatched over the weekend for my son's birthday! Thank you Laurie
and Pauletta
for helping to make my son's birthday party hatch a success!
Out of 30 eggs set, 16 made it to lockdown and 12 hatched. We got 10 Black Copper Marans
, 1 Blue Copper Marans
(front and center), and 1 mystery chick! I'm guessing it is Welsummer x BCM? Welsummers don't have feathered legs do they? Whatever it is, it was the first to hatch and is my son's favorite.
Yay! What a bunch of cuties! Mystery chick may be from my BCMs - apparently there is something in their genetic history that keeps popping up here and there. You are the second to get a mystery chick from my eggs - I have not gotten one yet myself. They haven't interacted with the other chickens. They don't freerange and they are in their own pen inside the middle of the dogs kennel/yard area (their own little island). Contacted the person I got my Trio from and she said that her flock also had an occassional odd chick until she changed out one of her roos (my chickens possible father). Not sure
hey people:
I somehow had a whole bunch of PM's to people get lost missed or not go out. So If I didn't claim a swap from you in the last 2 weeks, and I just sent something now, I'm sorry!
At least I sent all my pp's out, lol.
If I somehow missed you and you need my address, yell at me. I know its my responsibility and i THINK I got everyone but there are a lot of pages >>.
I'm thinking that it is... just another lonely egg today. I did some research last night and I think they are suffering from heat stress. I'm doing my best to keep them cool, they have fresh water every day and lots of shade. I'm really hoping their laying goes back to normal soon... I've had to turn my regular egg customers down because I barely have enough for my own family.
I know lots of people have suggestions for breaking a broody. Myself, I never held out for long I stuffed eggs under broodies and watched them. If they were good broodies, I continued to stuff eggs the next time they sat, if not, I refused them eggs and in a month or three they got the idea.
I think I will give in and give them some Serama eggs tomorrow, they sure are cute all puffed up and stubborn. They are buff black tails one frizzled and one smooth from Castle Delight Seramas, their poor little roo Lobo looks lonely though.

Ok I spoke with the lady and she is gonna swap me a 2 yr old Female Nubian that is noturious for throwing Twins and is due to go into heat in August. She said a lot of people will normally charge next to nothing or just free buck service. So I am thinking I am gonna do it. Hers are SQ Which that means nothing to me. But she said she has Blue eyes. Not sure what that has to do with it. Lol......
