Ok - so i had to go to primed today for a bad scrape of my heel.

Well i have Staph. And no one can really explain to me what it is. But its always been associated with a gasp and a wince from others.

SO my peeps - what is it?

I think it's more like a general family of bacteria, Staph is the shortened version of the family name (I think). Some worse than others, and some always present on the skin just waiting for a cut/scrape to crawl up into.

When dogs get "hot spots" that's staph infection. So is Brumblefoot. There's a lot of different strains. Some more serious, some not. Sometimes me thinks it's a "catch all" name for an infected cut.

And that's as much as I know.

Staphylococcus aureus:

Staphylococcus is a group of bacteria that can cause a multitude of diseases as a result of infection of various tissues of the body. Staphylococcus is more familiarly known as Staph (pronounced "staff"). Staph-related illness can range from mild and requiring no treatment to severe and potentially fatal.

The name Staphylococcus comes from the Greek staphyle, meaning a bunch of grapes, and kokkos, meaning berry, and that is what Staph look like under the microscope, like a bunch of grapes or little round berries. (In technical terms, these are gram-positive, facultative anaerobic, usually unencapsulated cocci.)

Over 30 different types of Staphylococci can infect humans, but most infections are caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococci can be found normally in the nose and on the skin (and less commonly in other locations) of 25%-30% of healthy adults. In the majority of cases, the bacteria do not cause disease. However, damage to the skin or other injury may allow the bacteria to overcome the natural protective mechanisms of the body, leading to infection.

DH had a very bad staph infection a couple of years ago. He was on IV antibiotics for a couple of weeks, and felt miserable most of that time. This is the man that refuses to admit to being ill when he is at death's door. DSS had a bad staph infection a year or two prior to that. I am pretty sure that the MRSA infections are staph.

Yes it is. MRSA is the worst. It is "Methicillin-Resistant Staph Aureus". There is a gel called "StaphASeptic" for that. I have some. Got it on eBay, but most family pharmacies have it.

MRSA = methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus

I nice super bug from staph that survived and developed a resistance to broad spectrum antibiotics. The antibiotics that everyone runs to get with every little sniffle or fever they experience.

I was told Mersa is a staff infection...we all have staff germs in us already. It is highly contagious and can be hard to get rid of. Not saying you have mersa just saying it comes in different forms and mersa is one of the worst because it rejects a lot of antibiotics one of the hard staff infections to get rid of because of this.

I can honestly tell you, you have nothing to worry about some antibiotics and it will be gone, you didn't even know you had it, likely from an infected cut. if untreated it can result in some symptoms, tiredness etc..but you will be just fine. its funny how people gasp and wince about something they don't even understand. If you turn around and say do you even know what it is they will likely either lie and give no explanation or tell you the truth...lol....
