What's considered healthy?

Debate is what makes BYC a great resource. So much experience is recorded here, and folks get to take what they feel is relevant for their purposes, and they are free to disregard what isn't.

All flocks are different. All locales are different, some providing a more lush free range experience than others. (Think about comparing Yuma, AZ and Hawaii as far as browsing opportunities.) And flock managers also differ in temperament and experience.. What works for one may not be practical for all.

While I agree that the 10% treats is a good rule of thumb and keeps us offering mostly a balanced feed for our chickens, mine forage all day long during warmer months and subsequently eat an unquantifiable amount of bugs, dandelion, grass, and whatever else is growing around the yard that appeals to them. Which is nearly everything.

I am planning on making some "salad bars" out of pallets for the coming warmer months, so the "scorched earth policy" is avoided to some degree! Current plan is for clover and maybe wheat to be sown in the pallets...

Right now they are getting fermented alfalfa cubes in a 3:4 ratio to their organic fermented feed. For the greens. Since it is winter...
