I think one of my 2 two week old quail chicks has something stuck in its throat. I fed them at their normal time and then about 2 hours later I came by the brooder to check them and I found one sitting kind of weirdly. He wasn't making any noise and the rest of the flock was running around drinking water, eating, digging etc. I picked him up (and he didn't run) then I noticed that he was trying to chirp but no sound was coming out. I think something is stuck in his throat so I got him a drink of water and he made a few chirps but then it went silent again. Right now I'm keeping him warm (It's 95 degrees out side and the room is naturally at 90 so I've stopped using the brooder heater during the day) I checked the thermometer and it's still at 90 so it's not more hot than its been normally) Is there anything else I can do?

UPDATE: so after a furious bit of googling I found that others who have encountered this has decided it's either wry neck or compacted crop. I know this week was when the package of chick grit said to start giving them chick grit but the feed store said to start that when we start giving them greens. we hadn't started giving them greens so I haven't placed any grit in the brooder. (hopefully not a mistake). I did notice that there is a slight bulge in her throat. I've been giving apple cider vinegar water (I dip the beak every 15 mins) and then massage the bulge. The little fluff is now "up and at em", making occasional small chirps and I saw poop! (This is like having a baby child with the poop watching :)) Hopefully the little one makes it through. Any advice is still appreciated because I'm really going on google here.

If they are only eating crumble/pellets grit shouldn't be needed at all, the feed store is right about that. If they get grains or anything else that's not water soluble, they should have grit.
It could have eaten some af the bedding and that caused an impacted crop. I also read that simply eating pellets and not drinking at the same time can cause an impaction. Hopefully your massage managed to get whatever it was to move on.

I had a (chicken) rooster recently who had the problem and I think I tried just about every method in the book (plus several that probably aren't in any books) - ACV, oil, not feeding, feeding, lots of water, massaging the crop, trying to make him spit it out, not trying to make him spit it out, yoghurt, grit, not grit, bee pollen (I just had it on hand and it's supposed to help with just about anything, right?), brewers yeast, you name it - before finally trying a crop bra. Two days later his crop was empty as can be and now, about two weeks later he has been without the bra for a few days and seem to be doing well..

Have you been giving them sand? It helps because they always eat something they arent supposed to. Maybe he ate some bedding?
(I have never liked to raise mine on wood chips because every chick ive ever had has tried to eat it..)
He does look like he has something stuck in his throat, can you feel it in his throat or crop? I would put a drop of coconut oil to help loosen anythinf stuck and to help with irritation. I hope someone more experienced with this situation can help you soon too. I think there are ways to try to remove lodged things... the most important thing to do is keep the poor thing hydrated, so droppers of water every few hours if he isn't drinking, being very careful not to drown him, its easy to do that! And maybe with sav a chick or poultry vitamins in it too, since hes not eating... i hope the little cutie is ok.

So I've reintroduced him to the flock. I'd planned to do it just before night but the little guy was feeling better and no longer content to have me massage his throat. He decided to take a tour of our indoor plants (mainly salad greens that can't take the heat) and I'd parked him on the chair next to me while I worked so I could dip his beak every 15 mins. After he jumped out and made a run for it across the dining room I figured he was good. (lol) I added to one waterer some apple cider vinegar so the other water is normal water and then just in case I'll alternate sav a chick and apple cider vinegar in the water to make sure they don't have this problem.

Man! I thought he was a goner for sure when I first saw him. I'm so glad he isn't because our daughter would have been crushed. The little fluff still is a little low. I may single him our again tomorrow for a power hour of apple cider vinegar just to be safe.

Oh im so glad to hear that! Quail are so cute they have a special place in my heart and i hate it when you have to put one down or ones hurt.
I would just put the acv in all their water, sav a chick too, (all the right recommended doses though, i think you can overdo it with acv?)

So bad news. The little one didn't make it. I don't know why but I went in to check the brooder and the little fluff was still warm but buried under the bedding. I checked his neck the the lump that I was massaging wasn't any bigger than when we returned him to the rest of the flock. I think if we would have had a few more days with him being outside of the main flock maybe we could have helped more. I think each part of this process has taught me something. Right now I'm learning the value of a good "hospital" area. We had him in a small tupperware tote and when he was feeling better he kinda hopped out and ran around my work area then returned for water. So now we have 22 out of 24 that hatched.

I'm so sorry that the little baby didn't make it...:hugs It is quite a puzzling death though, again, I'm awfully sorry that the little one didn't make it.
