What do you mean by purr? A lot of chickens make a trilling like sound. If it lays eggs though, then it is for sure female.

i have no idea why it purrs, but it sounds like a happy bird.

Ok I mean that I have an Americana and she purrs and roosters purr and hens lay eggs. Also she lays an egg once a month should I be worried about that to?

"Purring", is not a trait that signifies you have a rooster. "Purring" isn't a noraml chickne trait at all. Do you mean crowing? Hen's can crow as well, usually dominant hens without a rooster in the flock.
