What's One Accessory That's Made Chicken Life Better?

In my predator proof protected chicken pens, they're totally enclosed so no hawks can zoom in, but they're not covered with a solid roof. To provide shade, I use something I already purchased. These Pet Gazebos are awesome. I can move them easily, so they can be used as a chicken tractor. I set up some outside the pens & rotate where there are goodies to scratch & dig for, & where I'd like it a bit turfed up. I got a few to set up inside the pens & the chickens love them! There's a perch inside, so they can relax in shade. They're big enough with the perches set a bit closer to the front, that towards the back they can dustbathe & not be in their own poo. They're also great for when I have young birds, as I can set them up inside with food & water, close the door & the older ones will gradually get used to them & not pick on or bully any.

I got my 1st chickens as a gift & they were still very young. I set them up in a large cage while my dad & I built a coop with pens. When we were working on the coop, I wanted to bring the young chickens outside...so I saw dog kennels & thought that's a great idea. When I saw the octagon shape of the Gazebos, I bought one to try it out. It's the best thing I have ever purchased! I have 10 of them now. I've been using the same original one since I bought it in 2015, the metal is painted & has held up well even near the salty air. The tops do fade out but the company Advantek honored their warranty & sent me new tops. I may eventually make own tops if necessary. Overall, I love the Pet Gazebos & my chickens do, too. ❤️🐔

I have a fully enclosed run and wasn't planning on closing their doors. Should I be closing at night? Is it just for predators, or is it to keep heat in the winter mayber?
I closed the door in the winter, but they got so loud in the morning, so I leave it open now so they can play in the run until I get up around 5😳to release them into the yard. I wouldn't care except I live in the city & want them quiet.

I leave for work way before dawn. I have a fully enclosed covered run so I leave the pop door open, and plan to do so all year. The sides of the run nearest the coop is covered with a weather break material 4 ft long. That protects feeders, waterers and a couple outdoor roosts.

the downside is the pop door was my only source of floor level for cooling in summer so now I am installing a ventilation fan in the coop ceiling.

#1- Heated waterers. Makes it much easier to provide water in the winter.
#2- No spill waterers and feeders.

As for lights, some do but I don't. I let my birds follow the natural cycle with shorter days in the winter. I don't want to treat them like factory farmers. For winter eggs, I preserve the extras in the spring using the water-glassing technique.
Water glassing technique - I'll have to look that up!!

You don't want to keep heat in, you don't want heat at all unless you live in the yukon. you want very good ventilation to prevent respiratory issues and frost bite. :]
Depends on the breed. You want ventilation up higher than the chickens. You do not want drafts in the winter. So i feel a closed door at night is a must
