The local ag teachers tries to dye chicks through the shell every year and it never works, I think the ‘chicks fell in water’ theory is more likely! I have used color crayon and pencil but have accidentally pressed too hard and cracked an egg. I like washable marker unless they get wet…. Sharpies would be fine, permanent and while in large doses may be toxic, the little bit of ink on the shell won’t make much difference. Dry erase might rub off. Maybe stay away from those really noxious permanent markers from 30 years ago too, as they smell awful! You’d be surprised what grandma has stuck away in a desk somewhere!
