Just like you would a dog. Wait for them to do what you are asking (it is usually by accident) and then give a treat and say "good boy". It sounds silly but it works. Mine know "go to bed", "no", "up up", "down", "come here", "hey hey" (makes them stop running, dancing, ect...) and they come running when I whistle. I only used treats during the training, now they do it without any food incentives.
I didn't know anything about chickens so I always treated them like dogs.
Wow! I would love for us to train our gang! All of them are very tame... but it's rather complicated at the moment.
We rescued all of ours... Buddy, is an 11 month old game rooster now (we've had him since birth). Is he too old to be trained?
Not anticipating any more... in January of this year... We also rescued 3 leghorns at 4 weeks old... but now they are almost 12 weeks...
Barley & Sunny (turned out to be roosters) and River (our ONLY hen!). They are all so much fun... that just the thought of giving any of them away is complex, but we think it will be necessary.
We are so new at this, we are not sure even "If" we can keep ALL the roosters??!!!! From what I've read, it's recommended to have at least 6 hens to 1 rooster! My husband is NOT real keen on the idea of having a big flock of birds at the moment.
BACK TO THE ORIGINAL QUESTION... CAN THEY BE TRAINED AT THEIR AGES? If we do have to give any away... it would be great for the new "parents" to enjoy them this way!
We are already afraid that Buddy (game roo) will attack if we let them be in the same yard. Buddy has been 'king of the roost" for almost a year now, and we've only recently introduced them. Right now, we are using a chicken tractor to separate them, but Buddy is so jealous he is OBVIOUSLY ANGRY.
I'm just learning about "holding" the roos... to show them who's boss!
Sorry for the long post.
