im so frustrated with myself tonight! im going to blame it on cabin fever, chicken math, boredom, i dont know this winter has gotten to me this year!
i llive in wisconsin and last year ordered chicks from indiana which was stressful enough as it was. and i said i would never order chicks so far away again.i lost 3 after it took amost 4 days for them to get to me. WELL.....after already deciding this year i wasnt going to purchase any, other than meat birds and incubating my own layers, my cousin called on his way to the post office. and again after he picked them up, oh all the chirping and cute sounds coming from the phone was about all i could take. i said where did you order them from? he said a hatchery in waterloo. so next thing i know im googling waterloo hatchery and just cant believe the prices on the first hatchery that came up. next thing you know i just ordered 15 more birds. damn it! there went my plan!
well needless to say only after i ordered, all happy for the money i saved from last year, and only after i recieved my order invoive and shipment of tomorrow did i notice they are coming from ALABAMA! how did i not notice this hatchery was not in waterloo wisconsin like i thought!
now im worried sick they wont get here before saturday and those poor chicks will be sitting somewhere all wekend! i know, i know, I KNOW. i was at work, overly excited, a little rushed and obviously did not read a damn thing on the site other than the prices! haha
has anyone ordered chicks this far away before? were they okay and how quick did they get to you. i know im a worry wort and bawled last year picking ours up and losing 3 in the process of shipmment. i guess im just looking for reassurance that they are tough lil buggers and hopefully will make it if they do sit untill monday. im praying they get here before saturday!

I'm in LA and I ordered 6-day old chicks that were shipped from OH. That's about 2/3 of the country in terms of distance and entirely different climates. The hatchery only ships at the beginning of the week and they ship Express so the chicks don't get stalled anywhere. The boxes are also clearly labeled live animals (however they put that) so they aren't neglected en route when being transferred from flight to flight.

So, my chicks took 2 days getting here but they were healthy and sturdy. That may be because they were a little older. I've ordered 1-day old chicks from the same company. They will be shipped in late June. I hope they can withstand the trip as well. But the hatchery is making me wait for the chicks' optimum time. So that's good. ...in terms of their survival rather than my impatience.

The hatchery should advise you when they're shipped and when they are expected to arrive. That way you can contact your local post office to expect them and to call you as soon as they arrive. The busy Los Angeles post office -- NOT known for personalize service -- did that for me and I was able to pick them up the same hour they arrived and were logged in.

i did call them today after i got the shipment email just as a heads up. sadly they got used to me real quick last year. i called ahead to let them know, waited two days and must of called everyday after that. that last day when she called me, i hardly answered my phone and could hear the squealing that they had arrived. she was as relieved and excited i think as i was. i just know how slow our USPS can be sometimes. and im not judging, just preparing. or....overreacting

I live in New Hampshire and ordered from Texas. (Ideal poultry) they were 1 day old and I did not lose any. They were healthy and striving. I also ordered from cackle last year out of Missouri and didn’t lose any from them either. I received both orders of them in 2 days time. I am very happy with both companies

I ordered 15 chicks from MPC twice! They shipped from CT to pnw OR in less than 24 hrs. All came happy healthy and Chirping loudly when I got them home. One side of the country clear to the other with no issues. Fingers crossed for a safe delivery for you too!
