whats the most annoying response you get when people find out you have chickens?

If it makes you happy, who cares? I get mixed reviews about keeping a rather large flock. "Don't they smell bad"? "Aren't they a lot of work"? Aren't they expensive"? "Ohh, you're gonna get salmonella"! Whatever, I like them!
Then those nay sayers come over for a visit, end up in my coop and fall in love. I raise Silkies and Sizzles, so it always starts "What are those weird looking things"? Then they get a feather pile at their feet and "Oh my gosh, they're adorable, do you sell them"? Why yes, yes I do!

Enjoy your birds, continue to be happy and sneer when those nasty folks ask you for some eggs!
thanx for the advice! I love the look of silkies! Do they lay good eggs and do they do well in the desert?

Hey jgoodin, I get it too. I'm in el paso as well. Lower valley to be exact. I don't care anymore I love my birds. They are fun and funny. I call myself the crazy chicken lady.
yaaay! So you understand exactly what I'm talking about, both the sneers and cock fighting culture! I'm by Yarbrough and alameda so I guess that makes us neighbors.

We are alameda and Davis. A block from ysleta high. Thats so cool. I hear rooms around here and my boy joins in joyfully. We will have to meet sometime to swap chicken stories.

Great chicken weather we've been having here lately right?! I'm so glad that there's at least one other BYC members around here :)

We have only lived in this area of El Paso for 3 years. Lived far east before. The weather alot nicer then a couple weeks ago. Was not sure my babies would beat the heat. Thank goodness they did. I only have 5 birds. GLW roo. 2 comets a little red breed and a brabanter wyandotte mix. My roo a pain tho. He is gorgeous but still young and tends to be rough with the girls. I hear other rooster around but not really sure who all has chickens around here. Im glad to know I'm not alone in the area

oh ok, I grew up around here but recently moved back. I've lived in Kansas and Arizona as well. I have 2 red sex links that are laying, I also have two barred rock pullets and a white mystery chicken lol. I was really hoping she was a rooster but it doesn't look that way. Why is your roo a pain? If you ever want to give him away I'm just down the road. I hear that you need at least 10 chickens per roo but my neighbor who raises fighting cocks keeps 3 hens per stag and never has issues. I'm hoping 5 girls are enough for one rooster. I wanted to buy one locally but I've only been able to find fighting roosters and well I have a toddler so that won't work

I'll keep that in mind. Buffalo is my roo's name. He is great with my kids but tries to dominate me. My feet have scars from his efforts to be the big boss. I want more girls but my husband is not so keen on that idea. I want a rainbow of egg colors. Currently get white , pink, and two shades of brown. I want blue green and dark brown. Hoping next spring to add some

I feel ya. My wife is setting the limit pretty low for me too :). I would love a few Easter eggers and a few marans for the green blue and dark dark eggs. As far as buffalo goes, have you tried some of the advise on here? As soon as he learns you're the top "rooster" he should settle down a bit. I wish you great luck and lots and lots of eggs! :)
